Assignment01 PTRP

This document contains 15 questions about probability and random variables. Some questions ask for the probability of picking cards from a deck or marbles from a bag with certain properties. Other questions involve topics like binomial, Poisson, and normal distributions to calculate probabilities related to sales numbers, arrival times, weights, and more. The questions cover concepts in probability, random variables, distributions, means, variances, and density functions.

Random Variable

Assignment I
1. From a deck of 52 cards, Rohan picks up one at random. What is the probability of it being a
red non-face card? (Ans: 5/13)
2. You draw 2 cards randomly from a deck of 52 cards, what’s the probability that the 2 cards
have the same value or are of the same color?
3. Two marbles are chosen from a bag of 3 red, 5 white, and 8 green marbles, without
replacement! What’s the probability that one is white and one is green? (Ans: 1/3)
4. A class with 14 women and 16 men are choosing 6 people randomly to take part in an event!
What’s the probability that at least one woman is selected?
5. When you toss a coin 3 times, what’s the probability of getting an even number of heads?
(Ans: ½)
6. Suppose a box has 4 red marbles and 3 black ones. We select 2 marbles. What is the
probability that second marble is red given that the first one is red?
7. A box of candies has many different colors in it. There is a 15% chance of getting a pink
candy. What is the probability that exactly 4 candies in a box are pink out of 10? (Ans: 0.04)
8. A shop sells a par cular make of smart phone. It is assumed that the average daily sales of this type
of phone is 3. a) Find the probability that on a par cular day the shop sells
a> exactly 3 smart phones. B> at least 4 smart phones.

customers every 10 minutes. Determine the prob. that it is known that during the first hour of
trading, customers arrive at a garden centre at the rate of 3 customers every 10 minutes. (Ans:
0.1680)

random variable Y is related to X by the equa on Y = √𝑥 . Determine the probability density func on
of Y.
