TUTORING RECOMMENDATION - WHAT DO WE NEED?

The answer here really depends on your specific situation – the most important factors
are: your child’s grade level, what their current grades are, what grades they want to
achieve, and most importantly, their motivation levels.

While the best person to ask this question is your tutor, it will likely take at least a
lesson or two before they can give you an honest answer. Until then, feel free to review
our “Tutoring Recommendation” calculator.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS:

Grade Recomm- Reasoning

Primary school students tend to have lower concentration levels

so 1 hour is typically the maximum we recommend unless there
k-6 1 hour are severe difficulties. The 1 hour is usually enough to get
through the content and also help them develop critical
reasoning and concentration skills.

Depending on the student, 1-1.5 hours is what we recommend.

As the content grows in both volume and difficulty, getting
through all the work and creating true comprehension starts to
7-10 1-1.5 Hours take longer. Often 1 hour is not enough, especially if we want to
spend some time mentoring the student around their study
habits, exam prep and organization skills.

Given the huge amount of content being covered in grade 11 and

12, and the steep increase in subject matter complexity, we’ve
found that 1 hour per week is not enough to effectively support
most students. At this stage it is also critical for students to learn
11-12 1.5-2 Hours exam preparation techniques, do lots of practice tests, master
their revision habits and a variety of other soft organizational
skills – this is what it takes to perform well in an exam.
Realistically, most students will need 1.5 – 2 hour sessions.

 MATHS AND ENGLISH ASSESSMENTS
It is important to know your child’s knowledge gaps but highlighting to an already
struggling student the 100 things they might not know isn’t exactly the best way to
boost their confidence. Typically, your tutor will assess your child ongoingly and most
importantly pay attention to their study skills and habits. We actually have made
available our “Ezy Math” assessments for Maths & English These assessments
are designed to be worked through together with a student and they help to assess not
only knowledge gaps but also to assess study skills and habits. Whether or not you give
tutoring a try, we highly recommend this resource, it’s awesome!

PRACTICE TESTS
We all know about those students who seem to know everything but then completely
underperform in their exams. “Exam technique” is a real thing. Unfortunately, the only
way a student can learn to manage their anxieties and manage their time during exams
is by practicing under exam conditions. By far the best way to prepare for a test is to do
practice tests under test conditions. It helps if the practice material actually feels like a
test. For this reason we created the Ezy Math Practice Tests they look and feel like
a real test.

PRACTICE MATERIALS
We got you! If you decide to use our service you will get access to all our resources, but
even if you don’t, check out our Digital maths textbooks for grade 3-12. They come
with tips and tricks and worked solutions so your child can learn to review their
own work.

STUDY SKILLS
This is a big one. There’s so much info out there about study habits and organization
etc. A good place to start is our Study Skills Handbook This booklet we made tends
to focus more on the “thinking habits” that successful student internalize. It’s a great
read.

SUCCEEDING WITH A TUTOR

Some of the most important things are to set goals and expectations up front (with your
child and your tutor) and to create an effective feedback process. Parent involvement
can make a world of positive difference to the tutoring process when done right. In
