FRESH WATER MAKER AQUAMAR,

MODEL: "AQ-8/10"
DESCRIPTION

SINGLE STAGE FRESH WATER MAKER "AQUAMAR", TYPE AQ-8/10

The fresh water maker has a distillate production capacity of 8 t/day with condensation
seawater at temp. Max. 32ºC; and engine jacket cooling water temperature between
70ºC and 95ºC (other temperatures are available under request).

The fresh water maker consists of one vessel (one stage). The condensation water,
which is supplied by seawater cooling/ejector pump at a maximum temperature of 32ºC,
enters the plant at the condenser, flows through this condenser and condensates the
vapour produced.

From the condenser outlet, the unit feeds with seawater the brine/air ejector (where
brine and air is take off), and at same time supplies the required quantity of sea water (3
times the production) to be boiled.

The pressure inside the chamber is less than atmosphere (vacuum), in this way the
boiling temperature is low, but in any way bigger than 50ºC. The vapour arise from the
brine level in the heater tube bundle, flows through the demister where atomised brine
in the vapour is separated and pure steam flows to be condensate in the condenser.

The brine level is regulated through the flow control valve and the hot box in any
condition.

As heating medium, engine jacket cooling fresh water will be used. If it is required other
heating sources can be used, please advice.

EQUIPMENT/FITTINGS/ACCESORIES/MATERIALS:

The fresh water maker AQ-8/10 is a packaged unit. All components and accessories as
distillate pump,salinometer/control panel, accessories, interconnecting pipe work are

INSTALLATION
Before installation of the plant, operators should be aware of the contents of this
manual.

Suitable facilities, for example lifting equipment, must be provided to enable the
plant to be installed safely. Mechanical installation must be completed before
electrical connection; remember that the mixture of water and electricity can prove
fatal.

Electrical installation must only be undertaken by persons suitably experienced

and qualified.

Suitable arrangements must be provided for the storage of spare parts, lubricants,
preservatives and chemical cleaning materials.

OPERATION
The control and safety system provided is necessary for the safe operation of the
plant. Any device removed or adjusted to facilitate maintenance must be replaced
and/or readjusted before the plant is returned to service.

Operators who are likely to be in contact with the machine lubricants, or the
chemicals used for protection or cleaning must be provided with, and wear,
suitable protective clothing.

MAINTENANCE
Electrical maintenance must only be undertaken by persons suitably experienced
and qualified.

Ensure that electrical supplies are properly isolated before undertaking any
maintenance procedure.

AQ08-INF-TEC-ING 6
The supply should be disconnected by operation of the main switch, circuit
breakers, removal of fuses or other acceptable method. A notice should be placed
at the point of isolation showing:

DANGER
WORK IN PROGRESS

Place a free space surrounding the unit to facilitate the working. Make sure that
you have a clear path of retreat.

Check the explosion risk before using welding equipment or electrical hand tools.
When working in confined spaces, make sure that no dangerous gasses are
present.

CHEMICALS
Read and observe the Health and Safety instructions provided on chemical
containers or data sheets.

Take normal precautions to avoid skin contact and the inhalation of vapors.
Provide adequate ventilation.

If a chemical substance comes into contact with the skin take immediate and
appropriate first aid action and seek medical attention.

AQ08-INF-TEC-ING 7
INSTALLATION DETAILS
The fresh water generator "AQUAMAR" must be installed as close as possible to
the heat source so as to minimize heat looses on the connection pipes between
F.W.Generator and heat source.
Minimum space must be left around the unit for maintenance works.

It is very important to foresee space for the periodic maintenance or chemical

cleaning purposes of the heater or condenser (see dimensional drawing).

It is preferable to install the desalinator from bow to stern so as the heat

exchanger is always covered with water and the liquid free surface balance is
reduced.

It will be only necessary to connect 6 pipes to the unit to become operative.

Pipe size and situation are showed in dimensional and flow drawings for each
Fresh Water Generator.

4.1.- SEA WATER SUPPLY

Seawater from circulating pump discharge must be connected to the condenser
inlet.

The seawater pump suction must be as near as possible to the sea chest to avoid
cavitations and always below seawater level (it is a not-self priming pump).

The length and elbows of this pipe will be minimum, to avoid pressure looses.

One inlet valve must be placed in the condenser inlet for insulation and pressure
regulation.

In cold seawaters, we recommend the installation of a manual vacuum breaker

valve of needle type to control the boiling temperature maintaining it over 45ºC.
With this installation the unit reduces its capacity and doesn't subcool the unit,
allowing to fresh water generator reaches its nominal capacity.

AQ08-INF-TEC-ING 8
4.2.- HEAT SUPPLY
The jacket cooling water from engine (waste heat) must be taken, if it's possible,
before the engine thermostatic valve. An inlet and outlet valve must be fitted on
the Distiller Heater for insulation purposes.

It is necessary to install a by-pass valve between the inlet and outlet of this heater
to regulate the hot water flow to the desalinator and, in this way, the production of
the unit. Anyhow, enough hot water must be supply to the unit for correct
operation. In this manual are included some installation diagrams depending on
the engine characteristics or steam proprieties.

Normally the Fresh Water Generator connections to engine jacket cooling water
circuit must be agreed with engine manufacturer.

For pipe dimensions see dimensional drawing enclosed. These pipes never must
be smaller than the heater connection.

When the operation of the fresh water generator is required and the main engine
is out of service or its thermal energy is not enough to reach the fresh water
nominal capacity, other fluids can be used as heat source. By example: Steam,
pressurized water, thermal oil, electrical heater, etc. In this manual are included
some different installations using these alternative methods.

4.3.- DISTILLATE WATER

The distillate water pipe must be as is specified in the dimensional drawing. As
option, unit can be supplied with a counter-meter in the distillate outlet. We
recommend its installation to control the unit production.

4.4.- BRINE DISCHARGE

The brine discharge pipe will be of the specified dimensions and with a straight
section of 500 m.m., as it is described in fig. 4.2.

As it was said in the before chapter, the design of this pipe is critical for good
operation of the unit. Never install a square elbow after the diffuser tube. The
good installation of this brine discharge will allow a good performance of the unit.

AQ08-INF-TEC-ING 9
The maximum total backpressure allowed in the brine discharge is 0,3 bar(g). In
case that this backpressure would be higher, please consult with the factory.

Before overboard discharge, it is necessary to install a check valve with the

lowest pressure drop.

4.5.- GENERAL INFORMATION

The connecting pipes to the unit must be 1/2” or 1” bigger than the
ones installed in the fresh water generator to prevent pressure losses
in the jacket cooling water and sea water circuits.

Standard connections for small range (up to AQ-3/4) are threat (if it’s required the unit
can be delivery with flanges DIN-2576, PN-10)

Standard connections for medium and big range are with flanges DIN-2576, PN-10.
