Exponential Functions

Exponential functions describe situations where a quantity changes by a constant factor over equal time intervals. Examples include population growth, radioactive decay, and compound interest. Exponential functions take the form of y = ab^x, where b is the common factor the quantity is multiplied by each interval. The document provides examples of exponential growth of bacteria populations and radioactive decay to illustrate exponential models and their evaluation through equating exponents.

Simple terms and definition:

- Real-life situations involving exponential functions include population growth, population
decay, epidemic growth, interest in banks, and investments; just to name a few.
- Anything that increases or decreases rapidly is said to be exponential.

- Exponential functions take the form of :

-> (b>0, b≠1)

Examples of Exponential functions in everyday life:

• Example 1:
Exponential Function
Suppose a culture of 300 bacteria at MJD Farm is put into a Petri dish and the culture
- Functions involving exponential expressions showing the relationship between an
doubles every 10 hours. Give an exponential model for the situation. How many
independent and dependent variable.
bacteria will there be after 90 hours?
- Wherein x is the independent variable, and y or f(x) is a dependent variable.
- (e.g.)

Exponential Equation
- An equation involving exponential expressions that can be solved for all x values satisfying
the equation.
- (e.g.)

Exponential Inequality
- Inequality involving exponential expressions that can be solved for all x-values satisfying the
inequality.
- (e.g.)

• Example 2
A certain radioactive substance decays half of itself every 5 days. Initially, there are
50 grams. Determine the amount of substance left after 30 days, and give an
exponential model for the amount of remaining substance. Evaluation of Exponential Equations

Step 1: Express both sides in terms of the same base.

Step 2: Equate the exponents.
Step 3: Solve the resulting equation.
