There are three distinct activities in every government through which the will of the people are expressed. These
are the legislative, executive and judicial functions of the government. Corresponding to these three activities
are three organs of the government, namely the legislature, the executive and the judiciary.
Legislature
It forms laws and procedures, along with examining the administration and its resolutions. The
chief function of the legislature is to enact laws.
It is the basis for the functioning of the other two organs, the executive and the judiciary.
It is also sometimes accorded the first place among the three organs because until and
unless laws are enacted, there can be no implementation and application of laws.
Executive
It comprised of the President or Governor, Council of Minister at Union or State level, along with
the administration which executes and enforces laws made by the legislature. The executive is
the organ that implements the laws enacted by the legislature and enforces the will of the state.
Judiciary
The Supreme Court (SC) at the top level to the community courts at the bottom. They interpret
the laws made. The judiciary is that branch of the government that interprets the law, settles
disputes and administers justice to all citizens.
The judiciary is considered the watchdog of democracy, and also the guardian of the
Constitution.
It comprises the Supreme Court, the High Courts, District and other subordinate courts

Population Composition
The population composition of a country tells about age profile, sex, literacy level,
health condition, occupation and income level. Thus, the structure of the population is
called population composition.
The relative number of children (below 15 years) and that of the elderly (above 65
years) shows the relative number of dependents in the population. The relative number
of people in the working age (between 15 and 65 years) shows the relative number of
productive people.
The population pyramid of Kenya is very wide at the bottom and very narrow at the
top. This means that while the birth rate is very high, so is the death rate. A larger
proportion of people below 15 years of age show that the relative number of
dependents is very high in Kenya.
The population pyramid of India shows a wider base but the middle portion of the
pyramid is in healthy shape. The top is narrow. This shows that there is sizeable
proportion of people in economically productive age group. This is a good sign for the
economy of India as the number of dependents is not too much.
