CHEMICAL REACTIONS and BALANCING CHEMICAL EQUATIONS

Objectives:
a. Explain how each factor affects the rate of a chemical reaction
b. Classify chemical reaction based on its type
c. Balance an unbalanced chemical equation

Part A. FACTORS AFFECTING RATE OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS

Surface Area of The Which texture of baking powder would react Reason:
Reactants with heat immediately? ___________________________________
-Exposing bigger surface ___________________________________
area of reactants A. fine and sifted ___________________________________
increases the rate of B. coarse
reaction
Temperature Which weather condition emits a pungent Reason:
-Collisions of reactant odor of esteros/canals? ___________________________________
particles will be more ___________________________________
efficient when each A. Cold cloudy day ___________________________________
particle possesses higher
B. Hot summer day
kinetic energy
Concentration Which is more effective as disinfectant? Reason:
-When concentration of ___________________________________
reactants is high, A. 70% Isopropyl alcohol ___________________________________
particles collide more B. 40% Isopropyl alcohol ___________________________________
frequently thus
increases reaction rate

Which basket of green mangoes will quickly Reason:

Catalyst ripen? ___________________________________
-A catalyst is a substance A. A basket of green mangoes covered with ___________________________________
that speeds up chemical
newspapers ___________________________________
reaction by lowering
down the reaction path
B. A basket of green mangoes added with
Calcium carbide (“kalboro”) and covered
with newspapers
Part B. TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS

Part C. BALANCING CHEMICAL EQUATIONS
Consider getting the total mass of the reactants and the product below:
H2 + O2 H 2O where: H= 1 g O= 16 g

(Reactants) (Product)
=H=
____ = O = _____
Total mass:
-How do you compare the total mass of the reactants with the mass of the product?
-Is the chemical equation correct? Why or why not?
-How are we going to correct the chemical equation above?

Why do we need to balance a chemical equation?

The Law of Mass Conservation:
 In a chemical reaction, the total mass of the reactants is always equal to the total mass of the
products
 Masses of the elements or compounds are conserved before and after a chemical reaction.
In balancing chemical equations:
1. Count the number of atoms of each element present in the reactant and product side
2. Balance the equation by placing the appropriate coefficients before an element symbol or a chemical
formula
3. Do not change neither add subscript to the symbol or formula to balance the equation as it will change
the identity of the component. Add coefficients only!

Following the rules in balancing chemical equation above, can you balance the given unbalanced equation
below?
H2 + O2 H 2O

Part D. BALANCE THE EQUATION AND IDENTIFY THE TYPE OF REACTION

Balance the equation: Type of Reaction:
1. HgO Hg + O2
2. H2 + Cl2 HCl
3. Zn + HCl ZnCl2 + H2
4. NaCl + AgNO3 NaNO3 + AgCl
5. CO + H2 CH3OH
6. P4O10 + H2O H3PO4
7. Mg(OH)2 + HCl MgCl2 + H2O
8. NaCIO3 NaCl + O2
9. AlBr3 + Cl2 AlCl3 + Br2
10. Cr + O2 Cr2O3
