IT 116: Human Computer Interaction 2

Activity: Design a Handheld Device

Objective: To design a handheld device using principles of user-centered design and human-computer
interaction.

Example of user groups for different product services.

1. Social media platform: Young adults aged 18-29 who are tech-savvy and enjoy sharing content
with friends and family.

2. Fitness app: People who want to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including fitness enthusiasts,
athletes, and people recovering from injuries.

3. Online shopping website: People of all ages who prefer the convenience of online shopping,
including busy professionals, stay-at-home parents, and elderly people who have limited mobility.

4. Banking app: People who want to manage their finances on-the-go, including young
professionals, entrepreneurs, and busy parents.

5. Educational software: Students of all ages who want to enhance their learning experience,
including elementary school students, high school students, and college students.

6. Healthcare app: Patients who want to track their health and wellness, including people with
chronic conditions, elderly patients, and people who want to improve their overall health.

7. Transportation service: Commuters who want a convenient and affordable way to travel,
including urban professionals, students, and tourists.

Base on your assigned number follow the instructions below:

Step 1: Identify the purpose of the handheld device. What problem does it solve or what need does
it address?
The Livescribe Echo Smart Pen handheld devices is designed to offer a complete solution
for people who love the pleasure of using a pen and paper but also require the practicality and
functionality of digital tools. It meets the following requirements and resolves associated issues:
Digital Note-Taking - with the help of the gadget, users may make digital notes and annotations
immediately on the screen, doing away with the need for actual notebooks and cutting down on
paper waste. The changeover between analog and digital workflows is easy thanks to it.
Seamless Digitization - with the help of the integrated scanner, users may quickly and easily turn
tangible documents, such as receipts or handwritten notes, into digital ones. By removing the
need for manual data entry or digitization, time and effort are saved. Integration and
Organization - by connecting to cloud storage platforms, the device ensures that all notes,
sketches, and scanned documents are securely backed up and easily accessible across multiple
devices. It solves the problem of data loss and facilitates efficient organization and retrieval.

Overall, the Livescribe Echo Smart Pen fills the demand for a flexible and effective tool
that unites analog and digital workflows by offering a special handheld gadget that makes note-
taking, digitization, and organization easier.
Step 2: Identify the target user group. Who will be using the device, and what are their needs and
preferences?

The Livescribe Echo Smart Pen is a useful tool for artists, designers, and illustrators who
frequently use pens and paper for ideation and sketching. They can simply digitize their
drawings, import them into editing tools, and maintain a smooth workflow between analog and
digital formats. Journalists and writers frequently need to record interviews, jot down brief notes,
or capture ideas while on the go. With the help of the voice recognition capability on the
Livescribe Echo Smart Pen, customers may quickly scribble down ideas or accurately transcribe
interviews. Anyone who enjoys writing or prefers handwritten notes will find the Livescribe
Echo Smart Pen as a general note-taker and organizer. It provides services to those who desire to
keeping the comfort and feel of utilizing pen and paper while digitizing their notes for simple
storage, retrieval, and sharing.
Step 3: Conduct user research to gather insights into user needs, preferences, and behaviors. This
can include surveys, interviews, and observations.

I surveyed my parents, friends, and people around me, and the findings showed that they could
activate a smart pen's features by saying "Hey pen" or "Hello pen" to call it to their attention. The pen will
listen to their instructions after receiving this voice-activated activation signal. They can then use a
variety of commands to carry out different actions. Making a new note is one of the basic commands. The
user can say "Open a new note" or "Start a new document" to start writing or drawing. For their artistic or
educational activities, this command opens a new page. It's critical to keep track of their work after
they've spilled their ideas onto the digital canvas. When they prompt you to "Save the current note" or
"Capture this," using the pen, they could digitally preserve their handwritten notes, keeping them safe and
making them available in the future. The "Undo" or "Redo" instructions can be used in the event of a
mistake or an undesirable stroke. They are able to correct errors or pursue different creative avenues
thanks to these phrases, which let them go back and repeat the pen's earlier activity.

Step 4: Create user personas based on the user research findings. User personas are fictional
characters that represent the characteristics, needs, and behaviors of the target user group.
Step 5: Use the user personas to create design requirements for the handheld device. These
requirements should address the needs, preferences, and behaviors of the target user group.

This device should always be charged because battery life is important for this device.

This device should have accessibility and inclusiveness.

This device should have connectivity and integration.

Step 7: Create detailed design specifications for the handheld device, including materials,
components, and manufacturing requirements.
