Assignment 1
Assignment 1
Huge and grave matter like mental health, Bangladesh has been largely ignoring this issue among
Bangladeshi youth society for an indefinite period and almost everyone feels that these mental health
issues are the target of prejudice and stigma. When people were isolated from each other due to the
covid-19 pandemic, it put the youth especially to the heap of depression and anxiety. And this increased
prevalence of depression and anxiety has put the youth of Bangladesh in a mental health crisis.
According to a Cambridge University research, 17.1% of the adults in Bangladesh suffer from mental
health condition. Among many factors, young people in Bangladesh suffer primarily because of a lack of
awareness, social support, and counseling facilities as far as their mental health is concerned.
Youth in Bangladesh are suffering from mental health problems because of lack of awareness, which in
our culture are often shown by social restrictions and medical procedures. The lack of awareness is due
to the overall culture of our country. In Bangladesh, a regular family doesn’t want to admit even if there
is a mental health patient in fear of stigma. A study found that two-thirds of people with mental illness
choose not to seek treatment for their condition due to fear, embarrassment or misinformation.
Additionally, not including mental health topic in the school curriculum poses another challenge. As a
result, children do not take the matter seriously when they become adults and eventually undergo it in
silence. To fight this problem Bangladesh should come up with a media strategy and give a drive to
include in the school curriculum. To fight this problem Bangladesh should come up with a media
strategy and give a drive to include in the school curriculum.
Secondly, lack of social support makes it extremely difficult for young people to reach out for help in
situations of mental health crisis. In a mental health crisis situation, awareness is not alone important;
what matters is confidence in the existence of social support. There are several reasons behind this lack
of support, such as; People in society do not care about others because while they themselves needed
social support, they also did not receive that support from others. However, if there were proper social
support structures like group therapy, medical supervision, and crisis intervention, it would help young
people because proper social support would ensure that a person can seek help without hesitation in
their times of need.
There is another factor called "counseling", in the absence of which the youth face a tough time.
Counseling is a great form of practice when someone is going through a mental health crisis. Counseling
allows young people to identify the factors contributing to their difficulties and deal effectively with
their psychological, behavioral, and interpersonal problems. And the youth are deprived of this vital
support from their government and society and thus they are pushing themselves towards darkness day
by day. We should ensure that we have adequate counseling facilities for people facing mental health
problems.
As there are lack of awareness, social support and counselling facilities, youth of Bangladesh suffer from
mental health issues and that’s why it is concerning matter. Although, mental health of youth people
has received little attention these days but there is still much to be done to address it. Still, we need a lot
more awareness and policy implementation at the national level to tackle this issue. We need to be
more empathetic so that anyone facing a mental health crisis can get better social support We need
better counseling facilities so that people can seek help in their time of need without hesitation. If we
can do these things, then we can ensure that the youth of Bangladesh will live good and healthy life and
won’t face any mental health crisis.
