Course Description:

This unit of study aims to provide IT technical specialists and non-IT professionals with an understanding of
the major issues facing managers in the effective use of information technology in contemporary
organizations. In particular, it will focus on identifying and developing the right IT application to achieve the
business objectives during times of rapid technical change. Topics include components of computer system,
concepts of software development, UML, E-commerce, concepts of Databases; ERP, concepts of Network,
CMS based internet technology, World Wide Web, Security and privacy issues in IT. This course will also
include lab sessions providing functional orientation to word processing, spreadsheet, visio, MS project,
Contemporary Multimedia Presentation tools such as power point and Prezi, Concepts of database and web
pages design using content management systems such as wix, opencart, wordpress etc

Course Objective:

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:


 Understand the nature, role and contribution of information, information systems, and information
technology and the information/knowledge resources in business environments.
 Introduce the computer systems with emphasize on various components of computer systems such as
hardware and software
 Discuss the functionality of computer systems, computer applications, computer programming,
databases, internet and the world wide web Practically instruct about computer environments and
applications like Windows, MS Excel, MS Power Point, Database, Multi-media tools and ERP solutions.
 Demonstrate knowledge of fundamental computer hardware and apply that knowledge to produce
hardware configuration specifications for a business context.
 Understand fundamental Application development, Project management, networking principles and
design and apply that knowledge to produce a network design model for a simple business problem
 Demonstrate the ability to work and contribute in a group in order to analyze the requirements and
technology to build an functional E-commerce site.
By the time you finish this course, you’ll have the confidence and skills to apply your knowledge to the
workplace.

Teaching Methodology:

In order to achieve success, it is vital that the course tutor and the students cooperate with each other in
identifying areas, which may need further clarification. It is expected that Extensive lectures will be given on
every topic followed by real life examples. Summary of the lectures will be available through lecture modules.
Students are highly encouraged to take notes carefully. The lectures will be highly interactive. Cases will be
analyzed in class discussion encouraging students to participate and share their ideas regarding case problems.
Lab sessions will be conducted to apply some of the theories learned in the classroom. There are hands-on
exercises using computers for the students to learn how to operate certain software during these lab sessions.
Presentation (power point/video) will be used to motivate the interest of the various topics in the course.
Lectures will be based on problem solving and practices of exercises using whiteboard and seatwork. We shall
engage the students with maximum class activities rather confining them in term exams only.

Attendance & Class Participation:

It is important to attend all classes and for getting credit towards attendance (10%) & class participation
(10%) points. In each class, attendance will be recorded and very often, opportunity for active participation
will be provided for students during class time. Such participation opportunities will be both voluntary and
mandatory.

Quizzes:
Before each term exam (mid & final) only three will be taken and best two will be counted. Quiz dates,
question types and other details will be announced in the classes well in advance. There will be absolutely no
makeup of quizzes for those who will be missing.

Term Exams:

Both midterm and final exam will carry 40% marks for evaluation will be conducted on assigned week/date.
Question types, patterns, preparation strategies, etc. would be discusses in respective classes.

Lecture Slides & Course Material:

Lecture slides and related course material (software, eBooks, video tutorial, cases, etc.) will be available for
students in digital form. Students are encouraged to collect these using the VUES facilities. Only a single
hand copy (print) may be provided for the entire class for photocopy purpose.

 Class Schedule may change due to unavoidable circumstances.


 Any academic dishonesty or cheating in exams will result an “F” grade in the course.
 For further information please consult the AIUB student code of conduct & guidelines offered by BBA /
CSE program office.
