CFD Report

Uzair Ali conducted a 2D numerical analysis of water and oil laminar flow through a pipe. For both fluids, he created a geometry and mesh, selected the viscous laminar model, specified the material and boundary conditions, ran simulations using different schemes (PISO, SIMPLE, SIMPLEC, COUPLED), and analyzed the results through contours and reports. He found that the COUPLED scheme converged the results most easily, followed by PISO, with SIMPLE taking longer to converge. PISO and COUPLED schemes generally converge faster but are more computationally expensive, while SIMPLE is less accurate but faster.

Section A
Topic :2D numerical analysis of water and
oil laminar flow
Water laminar flow:
Geometry and Meshing:
For numerical analysis of water laminar flow first
step is to make geometry and mesh it. I made a
geometry of pipe and mesh it.
Model selection:
I selected viscous laminar model.
Material and Boundary conditions:
I selected the water as a material. Boundary
conditions are that for inlet Gauge total pressure
is 66900Pa
Scheme used:
I use PISO scheme for water laminar flow. Other
schemes are:
COUPLED
SIMPLE
SIMPLEC
Initialization and calculations:
In next step I select standard initialization with
absolute reference frame .For this flow , I select
1000 iterations.

Contours and report:

I select different contours for maximum and
minimum values at specific area.

Contour of velocity for stream function has

minimum and maximum value of zero.
In report section I slected different quantities
and find their values at specific area.
Change in scheme:

Material and Boundary conditions:
I selected oil as a material. Boundary conditions
are that for inlet Gauge total pressure is
64800Pa.
Scheme used:
I use COUPLED scheme for oil laminar flow.
Initialization and calculations:
In next step I select standard initialization with
absolute reference frame .For this flow , I select
1000 iterations.
Contours and report:
I select different contours for maximum and
minimum values at specific area.
Contour of pressure for relative total pressure
has minimum value of 615.8kPa and maximum
value of 648kPa.
In report section I slected different quantities
and find their values at specific area.

Discussion:
The analysis was done using three
different methods. The main purpose of
this project is to understand the working
of fluent and to compare different
methods to analyze best outcomes in
order to understand which method is
best. After observing the result of simple,
piso and coupled ,it is clear that coupled
scheme is best as the results was
converged easily. After coupled, next
best scheme is piso. It does not produce
good result as compared to coupled , but
the result convergence is better than
simple scheme.

PISO & COUPLED scheme generally is

more aggressive and converge faster
than SIMPLE per iteration cycle, but
SIMPLE is computationally much quicker
and the overall computational cost with
SIMPLE can allow you to perform more
iterations faster than you would be able
to with PISO or COUPLED. PISO and
COUPLED are generally preferred for
transient simulations.
