MOLES & STOICHIOMETRY MASTERY TEST 2011

Marks available: 30 marks

Time available: 45 minutes

Show all workings clearly. Answer in the spaces given on the test paper. If you need
extra space use the blank page at the end of the paper and label the question(s) clearly.

Use the data given in the attached unit conversion sheet.

All answers are to be reported to the appropriate number of significant figures.
Molar Masses: H = 1, C = 12, N = 14, O = 16, Na = 23, S = 32, Cl = 35.5, Ca = 40
Unit conversion data: 1 cal = 4.1868 J

1. Convert the following information to the units specified:

a.A mass of 56 kg of CH4 to an amount in kgmol

n =56 kg /16 kg/kgmol = 3.5 kgmol

[2]
b.An amount of 3.2 lbmol of H2 to mass in lbm

m = 3.2 lbmol x 2 lb/lbmol = 6.4 lb

[2]
c. A concentration of 0.35 gmol/dm3 of an aqueous CaCO3 solution to kg/m3

0.35 gmol/dm3 x 100 g/gmol x 1000 dm3/m3 x 1 kg / 1000 g = 35 kg/m3

[3]
d. A composition of a gaseous mixture of 62% H2 and 38% O2 to a composition by
mass %
Take 100 mol
H2: 62 mol x 2 g/mol = 124 g; 9.3 %
O2: 38 mol x 32 g/mol = 1216 g; 90.7 % = 91 %
Total : 1340 g
[2]
e.A level of gas contamination of 3200 ppm to vol.%

3200 ppm x 1% / 104 ppm = 0.32 %

[2]

f. The heat of vaporization of water, which is 41 kJ/gmol, to kJ/kg

41 kJ/gmol x 1 gmol / 18 g x 1000 g / 1 kg = 2300 kJ/kg

[3]

2. Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) reacts with hypochlorous acid (HOCl) to form hydrogen
chloride (HCl), sulphur and water. 17 kg of a 1.0 % solution of H2S reacts with an
excess of pure HOCl. What mass of HCl is formed?
Don’t forget to start with a BALANCED equation!

H2S + HOCl → HCl + S + H2O

m (H2S) = 0.01 x 17 kg = 0.17 kg = 170 g

n (H2S) = 170 g / 34 g/mol = 5 mol

One mole of H2S reacts to form 1 mol of HCl

Hence n (HCl) = 5 mol

m (HCl) = 5 mol x 36.5 g/mol = 182.5 g

[6]
3. As a 1st step in nitric acid production, ammonia is reacted with oxygen to form
nitric oxide in the following reaction:
4 NH3 + 5 O2(g)  4 NO + 6 H2O

A 100.0 kmol/h gaseous feed stream containing 40.0% NH3 and 60.0% O2 enters
the reactor. 80.0% conversion of the limiting reagent takes place. Calculate the
mol % composition of the product stream which exits the reactor.

40 kmol/h of NH3 would need 50 kmol/h of O2 to react but there are 60 kmol/h, hence O 2 is
in excess and NH3 is limiting

NH3 O2 NO H2O
in 40 60 0 0
reacting -0.8 x 40 = -32 -5/4 x 32 = -40 32 6/4 x 32 = 48
out 8 20 32 48

Total product stream = 108 kmol/h

NH3: 8/108 x 100% = 7.4%

O2: 20/108 x 100% = 18.5%
NO: 32/108 x 100% = 29.6%
H2O: 48/108 x 100% = 44.4%

Check: sum of percentages = 99.9% ok, minor rounding error
