Design of Reinforced Concrete Beams for ultimate limit state of shear

Example 1

A simply supported reinforced concrete rectangular beam of 6𝑚 span on 300𝑚𝑚 supports

carries 𝑤 = 108 𝑘𝑁⁄𝑚 uniformly distributed design load. The beam dimensions
300𝑚𝑚𝑥540𝑚𝑚(𝑏𝑥𝑑). Design the given beam for the shear. Use strength class 𝐶30/37
concrete and 𝑆 − 500 𝑀𝑃𝑎 for steel reinforcement.

Solution

Step 1: Load analysis

𝑤𝐿 108 ∗ 6
𝑉𝑚𝑎𝑥 = = = 324𝑘𝑁

Step 2: Determine design constants

𝛼𝑐𝑐 ∗𝑓𝑐𝑘
Material: 𝐶30/37 𝑓𝑐𝑘 = 30𝑀𝑝𝑎 𝑓𝑐𝑑 = 𝛾𝑐

The recommended value of 𝛼𝑐𝑐 = 0.85 [Refer ES EN1992:2015 Section 3.1.6 (1)]

For persistent and transient design situation 𝛾𝑐 = 1.5 [Refer ES EN1992:2015 Section

Steel: 𝑆 − 500 𝑓𝑦𝑘 = 500𝑀𝑝𝑎 𝑓𝑦𝑑 = 𝛾𝑠

For persistent and transient design situation 𝛾𝑠 = 1.15 [Refer ES EN1992:2015 Section

Step 3: Calculate design shear force 𝑉𝐸𝑑 at 𝑑 distance from the face support

Shear @ the center of support: 𝑉𝑚𝑎𝑥 = 324𝑘𝑁

𝑤𝐿 108 ∗ 6
𝑉𝑚𝑎𝑥 = = = 324𝑘𝑁

3 − 0.15 0 − 𝑉𝐸𝑓

Or 𝑉𝐸𝑓 = 324 − 108 ∗ 0.15 = 308𝑘𝑁

Step 4: Check concrete strut capacity 𝑉𝑅𝑑,𝑚𝑎𝑥 at the face of beam supports

The recommended limits angle 𝜃 are 1 ≤ cot 𝜃 ≤ 2.5. Refer ESEN 1992-1-1:2015 section

The recommended value of 𝜶𝒄𝒘 = 𝟏. 𝟎 for non-pre-stressed structures.

𝒁 is the inner lever arm for a member with constant depth corresponding to the bending moment

In the shear analysis of reinforced concrete without axial force, the approximate value 𝒁 = 𝟎. 𝟗𝒅

If 𝑽𝑬𝒇 < 𝑽𝑹𝒅,𝒎𝒂𝒙 for cot 𝜃 = 1 and 𝑽𝑬𝒅 < 𝑽𝑹𝒅,𝒎𝒂𝒙 for cot 𝜃 = 2.5 then the angle 𝜃 value
should be the minimum which is cot 𝜃 = 2.5 or 𝜃 = 22° .

If 𝑽𝑬𝒇 < 𝑽𝑹𝒅,𝒎𝒂𝒙 for cot 𝜃 = 1 and 𝑽𝑬𝒇 > 𝑽𝑹𝒅,𝒎𝒂𝒙 for cot 𝜃 = 2.5, then the angle 𝜃 value is
between 22° and 45° . It should be determined by the following equation by equating

If 𝑽𝑬𝒇 > 𝑽𝑹𝒅,𝒎𝒂𝒙 , then the section has to be increased.

Step 5: Check whether shear links required

Design shear force at 𝑑 distance from the face support 𝑉𝐸𝑑 = 250𝑘𝑁

Design shear resistance of concrete (𝑉𝑅𝑑,𝑐 ):

1
𝑉𝑅𝑑,𝑐 = [𝐶𝑅𝑑,𝑐 𝑘(100𝜌1 𝑓𝑐𝑘 )3 + 𝑘1 𝜎𝑐𝑝 ]𝑏𝑤 𝑑

Since 𝑉𝑅𝑑,𝑐 < 𝑉𝐸𝑑 , shear reinforcement must be provided.

Step 6: Design shear links

Thus, for two legs of the link, 𝐴𝑠𝑤 = 2 ∗ = 101𝑚𝑚2

∴Provide 𝜙8𝑚𝑚 𝑠ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑟 𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑘𝑠 @200𝑚𝑚 𝑐/𝑐

Step 7: Minimum shear reinforcement 𝜌𝑤,𝑚𝑖𝑛

𝜌𝑤,𝑚𝑖𝑛 = (0.08√𝑓𝑐𝑘 )/𝑓𝑦𝑘 = (0.08√30)/500 = 0.000876

𝑠

𝜋∗82
Use 𝜙8𝑚𝑚 as shear links 𝐴𝑠𝑤 = = 50.26𝑚𝑚2 for one legs of the link.
4

𝜋∗82
Thus, for two legs of the link, 𝐴𝑠𝑤 = 2 ∗ = 101𝑚𝑚2
4
