ASSIGNMENT NO:2

Q. No. 1. Design a lab network with 40 systems, and make a feasibility report to complete the network. In

feasibility report, you will write following details:

I. How many other devices you need to design the network, write complete detail.

II. Which topology is suitable to design the network?

III. Which type of cable you use to design and why?

DESIGNED A LAB NETWORK WITH 40 SYSTEMS ON CASIO PACKET TRACER:

Feasibility Report: Designing a Lab Network with 40 Systems

 Additional Devices Required:

To design a lab network with 40 systems, you will need the following additional devices:
1.Switches:
Depending on the network requirements and desired configuration, you will need a sufficient
number of switches to connect all the systems together. In this case, since you have 40 systems, you
will need at least one switch with 40 or more ports to accommodate all the systems. It is
recommended to have an additional switch as a backup or for future expansion.
2. Router:
A router is necessary to connect the lab network to external networks such as the internet, if
required.

Depending on the network setup and specific requirements, you may need a router with appropriate
interfaces and capabilities to handle the desired network protocols (e.g., Ethernet, Wi-Fi, etc.) and
provide connectivity beyond the lab network.

3. Network Firewall:
To ensure network security, it is advisable to incorporate a network firewall device. The firewall
can be a standalone device or integrated into the router, depending on the chosen equipment.

4. Network Storage:
If there is a need for centralized data storage or file sharing within the lab network, you may
consider adding a network-attached storage (NAS) device. This can provide a centralized storage
location accessible to all the systems in the network.

5. Network Monitoring Equipment:

To monitor the network performance, troubleshoot issues, and ensure smooth operation, network
monitoring equipment such as network analyzers or monitoring software can be utilized.

 II. Suitable Topology:

Considering the lab environment and the number of systems (40), a hybrid topology is
recommended. In a hybrid topology, multiple network topologies are combined to create a network
design that suits specific requirements. It incorporates elements of different topologies, such as star,
bus, ring, or mesh, to optimize various aspects of the network. This combination allows for
flexibility, scalability, fault tolerance, performance optimization, and segmentation. Different
segments of the network may use different topologies based on their needs. For example, critical
systems may be connected in a star topology for high bandwidth and easy management, while less
critical systems may use a ring or bus topology for redundancy and cost efficiency. By leveraging
the strengths of various topologies, a hybrid topology offers a customized solution that balances
different requirements and maximizes network efficiency.

 III. Type of Cable:

For the lab network, it is recommended to use Ethernet cables with twisted-pair copper wiring.
Specifically, Category 6 (Cat6) or Category 6a (Cat6a) cables are suitable choices. These cables
provide higher bandwidth and better performance compared to older standards, allowing for faster
data transmission.
Reasons for choosing Cat6/Cat6a cables:
1. Bandwidth: Cat6 and Cat6a cables support higher bandwidth, which is beneficial for handling
large amounts of data traffic within the lab network.

2. Future-proofing: Cat6/Cat6a cables offer improved performance and are backward-compatible

with older Ethernet standards. By choosing these cables, you ensure that your network can handle
future upgrades and higher data rates.
3. Reliability: The twisted-pair design of these cables reduces interference and crosstalk, resulting
in a more reliable and stable network connection.

4. Distance: Cat6/Cat6a cables can support longer cable runs without significant signal degradation,

allowing flexibility in the placement of systems within the lab.

In conclusion, designing a lab network with 40 systems requires additional devices such as
switches, a router, network firewall, network storage, and network monitoring equipment. A hybrid
topology is suitable for this network, providing scalability and ease of management. To ensure
optimal performance and future-proofing, Cat6 or Cat6a Ethernet cables are recommended due to
their higher bandwidth, reliability, and compatibility with current and future network standards.
