    1 A 0.60 m long copper wire has a diameter of 0.10 cm. What is the resistance of the wire? (The
    resistivity of copper is 1.710-8  m.)

    A=πd2 / 4
    R=p L/A R= 1.7x10-8  m (0.60 m) / 7.85x10-2 m2 = 1,3x10-2  A=π(1x10-3m)2
    Answer: The resistance of the wire is 1,3x10-2  A=7.85 x 10-7m2

    2 An electric water heater is designed to produce 50 kW of heat when it is connected to a 240 V


    source. What must be the resistance of the heater?

    I=P/V 50 000W / 240V= 208.3 A


    R=V/I 240V / 208.3 A= 1.15 

    Answer: The resistance of the heater must be 1.15 .

    3 A computer CD-ROM drive that operates on 120 V is rated at 40 W when it is operating.

    a) How much current does the drive draw?


    b) What is the drive’s resistance?

    a) I=P/V 40W / 120V= 0.3A


    P= IV 0.3 A (120V) = 36W

    b) R=V/I 120V / 0.3A= 400 

    Answers: a)The drive draw 0.3A as current, and b) its resistance is 400 .

    4 A material is formed into a long rod with a square cross-section 0.50 cm on each side. When a 100
    V potential difference is applied across a 20 m length of the rod, a 5.0 A current is carried.

    a) What is the resistivity of the material? A= L x L


    b) Is the material a conductor, an insulator, or a semiconductor?
    A=0.50 cm x 0.50 cm
    R=V/I 100V / 5.0 A= 20  A= 0.25 cm2
    p= RA/L 20  (2.5x10-3 m2 / 20 m)= 2.5x10-3  m

    Answers: a) The resistivity of the material is 2.5x10-3  m 0.25 cm2 = 2.5x10-3 m2
