refrigeration cycle and main components' functions, for details of reefer special work procedure

reefer loading and discharging safety precautions General safety rules filter dryer change charge gas
procedure trouble shooting

1 Loading of reefers

Prior all port of calls, reefers sockets have to be check and ensure that are in good working
condition.

- As soon as loading plan provided by local planner has been approved by chief officer, a list of
loading reefers will be given to duty officer & duty AB

- Same loading list will be given to Reeferman who will have also the reefer manifests

- At loading, check the stowage position, general condition of the container (too rusty, dents, holes,
leakage, smell), check the seals.

- Once on board, reeferman should check the following:

- loading temperature set point against manifest set point

- Ventilation settings

- Dehumidify settings

- running parameters

- abnormal noises of motor or fans

- cable and plug condition

- Active alarms

- Notify chief officer in case of any discrepancy and/or deviations

- Don't plug any reefer witch is not on the list provided by the Chief Mate, but signal it.
As general rule, the orientation of motors should be always facing the engine casing (bay 10-74
motor toward aft / bay 78-94 motor toward fwd).

2 Monitoring

- Two times per day, reeferman must perform a reefers physically check.

- Fill up on daily basis the reefers temperature logs.

2 Interventions on reefers

- Report to chief engineer or electrician any reefer malfunction

- Perform the repairs (technical manuals available on REFCON computer)

- Fill up repair report and sent to concerned parties

- In case of using of spare part, inventory should be updated

In all the interventions on reefers, all safety precautions are in force. Additional to PPE, a ladder, a
harness and insulating gloves are all the time at disposition of reeferman. Using of them is
compulsory.

3 Discharge of reefers

- Before the arrival in port, discharging list will be provided to duty officer, duty AB and reeferman.
(Including eventually restows)

- Reefer temperature log to be prepared in electronic and hard copy

- Printed logs are to be signed by reeferman and checked by chief officer

REEFERMEN

1 Refrigeration Fundamentals

- Refrigeration principles:

- Describe the main component of refrigerant system, and the main function of these component-
Can you describe the name of different part of refrigerant system
- How does a technician determine whether or not
there is liquid refrigerant leaving the evaporator

- Refrigerants and oils:

- What are the most commonly used refrigerant for reefer container

- Which lubricant is most commonly used with R134a refrigerant

2 Refrigerants handling

- Can we filled to over 90% capacity refrigerant to cylinders

- Can we use oxygen to do the leak testing for refrigerant system

- All refrigerants have flammability and the toxicity classifications. Where could a technician best find
those ratings

- Which device is used to stop the flow of liquid or vapor in a refrigeration system

- Where is the liquid receiver located? between which 2 component

- What device is used in a refrigeration system to protect the Compressor from liquid slugs

3 Components Function & Special work procedure

- Why is it important to know the direction that a scroll compressor is rotating

- What type of expansion valve regulates its flow based from suction line superheat

- Why is it important for the oil separator to be sized properly, insulated and located as close to the
compressor as possible

- What device can be regulate the calculating evaporator superheat

- Why the refrigeration systems must be fully evacuated before charging with refrigerant

- For the liquid receiver service valve, what could be used to

- Why we should take care, When charging liquid refrigerant into a compressor
- Describe the procedure of charging refrigerant to the reefer system

- Describe the procedure to replace filter drier

4 Basic Electricity

- What is amperage measure? What is voltage measure? What is wattage measure

- What are the devices used to protect electrical circuits from overcurrent

- What is the function of rectifier

- What device would be used to cycle the condenser fans on and off as system head pressure
changes

- What kind of sensor uses a positive temperature coefficient thermistor (PTCT)

- What is the function of low pressure control

- What device is used to prevent refrigerant migration to the compressor during the off cycle

- What device is used to shut the compressor off if the suction falls below a given set point

- What is the function of a timer release solenoid

- What type of valve is used to direct hot gas from the condenser to the reclaim coil

- What is the result if three phase power get unbalanced

5 Trouble shooting & Reefer Operation

- What are the reasons low suction pressure for compressor

- What are the reasons for high discharge pressure for compressor

- what are the reasons for reefer cannot reach set temperature? Solution
- Describe the normal operation of reefer container during loading / daily routine / discharging

- After a reefer is loaded on board, and plugged to ship power and it cannot start - describe solution
/ how do you troubleshoot?
