1 Loading of reefers
Prior all port of calls, reefers sockets have to be check and ensure that are in good working
condition.
- As soon as loading plan provided by local planner has been approved by chief officer, a list of
loading reefers will be given to duty officer & duty AB
- Same loading list will be given to Reeferman who will have also the reefer manifests
- At loading, check the stowage position, general condition of the container (too rusty, dents, holes,
leakage, smell), check the seals.
- Ventilation settings
- Dehumidify settings
- running parameters
- Active alarms
- Don't plug any reefer witch is not on the list provided by the Chief Mate, but signal it.
As general rule, the orientation of motors should be always facing the engine casing (bay 10-74
motor toward aft / bay 78-94 motor toward fwd).
2 Monitoring
- Two times per day, reeferman must perform a reefers physically check.
2 Interventions on reefers
In all the interventions on reefers, all safety precautions are in force. Additional to PPE, a ladder, a
harness and insulating gloves are all the time at disposition of reeferman. Using of them is
compulsory.
3 Discharge of reefers
- Before the arrival in port, discharging list will be provided to duty officer, duty AB and reeferman.
(Including eventually restows)
REEFERMEN
1 Refrigeration Fundamentals
- Refrigeration principles:
- Describe the main component of refrigerant system, and the main function of these component-
Can you describe the name of different part of refrigerant system
- How does a technician determine whether or not
there is liquid refrigerant leaving the evaporator
- What are the most commonly used refrigerant for reefer container
2 Refrigerants handling
- All refrigerants have flammability and the toxicity classifications. Where could a technician best find
those ratings
- Which device is used to stop the flow of liquid or vapor in a refrigeration system
- What device is used in a refrigeration system to protect the Compressor from liquid slugs
- What type of expansion valve regulates its flow based from suction line superheat
- Why is it important for the oil separator to be sized properly, insulated and located as close to the
compressor as possible
- Why the refrigeration systems must be fully evacuated before charging with refrigerant
- Why we should take care, When charging liquid refrigerant into a compressor
- Describe the procedure of charging refrigerant to the reefer system
4 Basic Electricity
- What are the devices used to protect electrical circuits from overcurrent
- What device would be used to cycle the condenser fans on and off as system head pressure
changes
- What device is used to prevent refrigerant migration to the compressor during the off cycle
- What device is used to shut the compressor off if the suction falls below a given set point
- What type of valve is used to direct hot gas from the condenser to the reclaim coil
- What are the reasons for high discharge pressure for compressor
- what are the reasons for reefer cannot reach set temperature? Solution
- Describe the normal operation of reefer container during loading / daily routine / discharging
- After a reefer is loaded on board, and plugged to ship power and it cannot start - describe solution
/ how do you troubleshoot?
