Assignment No.3 (Fall-2022)
Solution
Q 1. A 600 watts, 48 V and 3000 rev/min brushless dc motor is used to drive an
electric vehicles. The input dc supply of this motor is supplied from PV
modules. The name plate capacity (voltage and power ratting) should be
taken from the catalog of the PV modules. Design a dc-dc converter to run
electric vehicle at variable speed.

Let the voltage and current ratting of a PV module is 12 V and 180 watts.
So, at least 6 PV modules are required to meet the requirement of the
required power. They may be connected in series or parallel. If they are
connected in parallel then their output voltage is 12 V. This voltage level is
converted to 48 V with the help of boost and buck-boost converter.
The output dc current is computed as
P
I a  o  12.5 A
Va
The input voltage in this case would be
Vs  12V
Also, it is assumed that the switching frequency of 10 kHz with peak to
peak inductor current of 100 mA and peak to peak capacitor ripple voltage
of 100 mV.

The average and rms currents of the switching devices are also calculated
as.

I A( diode )  (1  k ) I L  12.5 A
I R (transistor )  k I L  43.30 A

The value of the peak current of the switching devices is calculated as

The voltage and current ratting of the switching transistor should be 70 V
and 60 A respectively.
With this information, now we select 75N75 MOSFET is employed as
switching transistor as its voltage and current ratting are 75 V and 80 A
respectively. The rise and fall times of this switching transistor are 232 ns
and 260 ns respectively. Now the values of the series and parallel snubbers
can be calculated as
