Dear Parent,

News from Room 156

Reading This week in reading we learned four reading strategies that we will use constantly throughout the school year and they are: 1. Check for understanding 2. Back up and reread 3. Cross checking a. Does it look right? Sound right? Make sense? 4. Tune in to interesting words We learned that there are 3 ways to read a book and they are: 1. Read the pictures 2. Read the words 3. Retell the story We also learned how to choose a good fit book. Please help your kids practice choosing good fit books by following the acronym, IPICK.

Math
This week in math we reviewed several concepts from first grade. We focused primarily on coin recognition and making small amounts using different coin variations, and also on telling time. Please take the time to work with your children at home on telling time and recognizing and counting change. These are skills that your child will use for the rest of their lives.

The first week of school has been one to remember1 I feel blessed to have such a wonderful and hard-working class to learn with each day. This week we learned about the responsibilities we have as second-grade students at Highland Park Elementary and we also had many discussions about what it means to be respectful. Together we decided on 3 classroom responsibilities and they are: 1. Be Safe 2. Be respectful 3. Always do your best I would like to thank you so much for trusting to me to nurture and educate your child and also for all of the support you have already offered me as your childs teacher. As always, if you have any questions or would simply like to visit about your child please feel

I look at a book Purpose (why am I reading the book) Interest (am I interested in the book?) Comprehension (do I understand what Im reading? Know all the words (do I know all the words?)
Finally, we began our first daily 5 component, read to self. The goal of read to self is that students can read good fit books independently to increase their reading stamina, (the amount of time they can read without interruption). They did wonderfully!

Social Studies: This week in Social Studies we began learning basic mapping skills. We learned what a compass rose is and how it can be used. We also drew a map of our classroom and labeled several important things around our classroom.

During literacy block in our classroom we use Daily 5 and CAF to structure our learning. These concepts were created to work together in the classroom to improve the reading ability of our students. Daily 5 is used in our classroom in the place of centers. As always, please ask if you have any questions.

Daily 5

The Daily Five is a way of structuring the reading block so every student is independently engaged in meaningful literacy tasks. These research based tasks are ones

that will have the biggest impact on student reading and writing achievement, as well
as help foster children who love to read and write. Students receive explicit whole group instruction and then are given independent practice time to read and write independently while I provide focused, intense instruction to individuals and small groups of students. When it is up and running smoothly, students will be engaged in the Daily Five, which are comprised of: - Read to Self - Read to someone -Word work -Work on writing -Listen to reading

There are very specific behavior expectations that go with each Daily 5
component. We will spend our first weeks working intensely on building our reading and writing stamina, learning the behaviors of the Daily 5 and fostering our classroom community. I will also spend time learning about your childs strengths and greatest needs as a reader in order to best plan for each students instruction. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

CAF CAF is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanding Vocabulary. The CAF menu is used to help students understand and master different strategies used by successful readers. The system includes goal-setting with students in individual conferences, posting of goals on a whole-class board, developing small group instruction based on clusters of students with similar goals, and targeting whole-class instruction based on emerging student needs and fine tuning one on one conferring. It goes hand-in-hand with the Daily 5.
