Activity 2: Head-On Collision
Part B: Convergence of Two Oceanic Plates
Objectives:
● Explain the processes that occur along convergent boundaries
● Determine the consequences of colliding plates
Procedure:
1. Study Figure 11 It shows a cross section of two converging oceanic plates.
2. Using your knowledge from the previous activity, identify the geologic events or
features resulting from this collision.
Questions for Analysis:
1. What are the geologic processes/events that will occur because of this plate movement?
Teacher: Ms. Katrina S. Dela Paz, LPT
Geological processes events occur when a more dense plate slides under a less dense plate and
sinks into the mantle. Scientists have observed numerous geologic processes happening on
Earth and named them based on their residual effects. These are listed below
The movement of the plates causes major geological events.
Types of Divergent and Convergent Boundaries
Plate Boundary Transformation
Result of convergent boundary subsection
2. What geologic features might form at the surface of Plate A?
Volcanic eruptions, Trenches, Earthquakes, and Tsunamis are some of geologic features which
might arise on the surface of Plate A. These geologic features are formed as a result of tectonic
plate movement or occurrences. The activities are based on the time scale and the rock layers
of the Earth.
3. If the edge of Plate A suddenly flicks upward, a large amount of water may be displaced.
What could be formed at the surface of the ocean?
When plate A's edge abruptly rises up, it causes a tsunami on the ocean's surface. But since
they occur under the water, tsunamis are triggered by converging oceanic plates. When
compared to other convergence plates, stronger earthquakes occur at the ocean-ocean
convergence. Strong earthquakes generate deadly tsunamis on the sea floor.
