TUTORIAL -6

1) Calculate the readings of the two wattmeter connected to measure the total power for a balanced
star-connected load shown in Fig. fed from a three phase, 400 V balanced supply with phase
sequence as R-Y-B. The load impedance per phase is (20+ 15j) Ω. Also find the line and phase
currents, power factor, total power, total reactive VA and total VA.

2) A 250kVA, 11 000 V/400V, 50Hz single-phase transformer has 80 turns on the secondary.
Calculate: (a) the approximate values of the primary and secondary currents; (b) the approximate
number of primary turns; (c) the maximum value of the flux.

3) A single-phase transformer has 1000 turns on the primary and 200 turns on the secondary. The
no-load current is 3 A at a power factor 0.2 lagging when the secondary current is 280 A at a power
factor of 0.8 lagging. Calculate the primary current and power factor. Assume the voltage drop in
the windings to be negligible.

4) The primary and secondary windings of a 500 kVA transformer have resistances of 0.42 Ωand
0.0019 Ω respectively. The primary and secondary voltages are 11 000 V and 400 V respectively
and the core loss is 2.9 kW, assuming the power factor of the load to be 0.8. Calculate the
efficiency on (a) full load; (b) half load
5) Assuming the power factor of the load to be 0.8, find the output at which the efficiency of the
transformer (of question 4) is maximum and also its value .

6) A 15-kVA, 2300/230-V transformer is to be tested to determine its excitation branch components,

its series impedances, and its voltage regulation. The following test data have been taken from
the primary side of the transformer

(a) Find the equivalent circuit of this transformer referred to the high-voltage side.

(b) Find the equivalent circuit of this transformer referred to the low-voltage side.

(c) Calculate the full-load voltage regulation at O.8 lagging power factor, 1.0 power factor, and at O.8
leading power factor.

(e) What is the efficiency of the transformer at full load with a power factor of O.8 lagging?
