Mode of Teaching and Learning

Course Site

For this semester, courses in the university are delivered in a blended learning mode setup.
This course will be asynchronous, synchronous online (e.g., online quizzes/exercises), and
face-to-face depending on how the learning outcomes will be achieved. This means that a
student enrolled in this course will still log in to a course site, our Learning Management
System or LMS (https://lms.tac.upv.edu.ph). This still consists of the course packs, including
learning resources, different guides, and a list of the required activities that can be done
asynchronously and/or synchronously and face-to-face. We will use a flipped classroom
model as recommended in the OVPAA Memorandum No. 2022-171 with a face-to-face
component of at least 50%. The face-to-face component, as recommended, will be delivered
in a learning-centered context, following, for example, the flipped classroom model we will
be using for this course. In this model, students are introduced to content at home and
practice working through it at school. This is the reverse of the more common practice of
introducing new content at school, then assigning homework and projects to be completed
by the students independently at home. In this course, for example, some of our face-to-face
activities are:
 Deep-dive discussions through Oral Recitation, Board work, games, etc.)
 Giving feedback on the answered problem sets.
 Collaborative work.
 Assessment (including proctored exams).
 Review.
 Peer Tutorial
Specific activities will be in the Study Schedule table.

If you are enrolled in this course but need help logging in or entering our course site, feel
free to contact our VLE Tech Support Unit through the Teaching and Learning Resource
Center.

Communication
You can communicate with me in any of the means below.

Course site
• Our Learning Management System is our main platform. So, if you have any
questions, clarifications, and other related information that you want to ask, you
can send me a private message to this platform during the class and consulta-
tion schedule between 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

E-mail
• If some of your files cannot be uploaded via the LMS or have other concerns that
can’t be done via the LMS, the second option is through email address. Still, you
must inform me ahead of time of your problem because my primary basis is the
one submitted to me via LMS or in person. You can send me a message or sub-
mit the requirements through my email at: [email protected] with a subject
format M53: [Query/Concern]. Expect my response within 48 hours, except on
cases when my internet connection is problematic.

Facebook/Messenger
• I know that Facebook does not require a lot of data and there are networks that
offer free data in messenger, so for the convenience of others, I also consider
this platform. I will be making a Facebook or Messenger Chat group for your

class just in case some activities can only be done here due to some reasons. My
Facebook/Messenger is Racquel Tabornal.

Text (SMS)/Call
• For those who cannot access the internet you can also text or call me if you have
any questions or any concerns related to the course. Please email me if you need
my contact number.

Alternative Platforms for Submissions or Acquiring Open Educational Resources:

Google Drive
• Google Drive link will be provided in the VLE where you can access all the course
packs.

Note:
• You may contact me through the different platforms within office hours (8:00 A.M.
– 5:00 P.M.). Always introduce yourself when you do since I do not respond to
messages from unknown senders. Please expect a reply to your SMS within 24
hours. Please also be reminded that questions, clarifications, and course-related
concerns may not be entertained during weekends and/or holidays. Use this time
as much as possible for your family, friends, and other personal activities. But on
a case-to-case basis, you can contact your instructor if unavoidable
circumstances will occur.

Course Materials

Throughout this period, you are given a course pack that you can access from the LMS, in-
cluding the following.

a. This Course Guide.

The one that you are reading is a course guide. This is a guide you must read first since it
contains all the general information needed for the course.

b. Required Readings and/or other OER per module.

This consists of the different types of learning resources for this course. Some learning re-
sources may include the required readings such as articles, textbooks, lecture videos, power
point as notes, etc.

c. A Study Guide for each topic/module

This guide contains the flow and content of the discussion of a particular topic or module for
the course. This is also where you can find all the activities, including your main
requirements labeled as 'Assignment.' Each study guide contains the objectives/learning
outcomes, references/learning resources, and activities to be done to make you think deeper
about the topic you have covered. You cannot skip the activities because one must be an
active learner to learn math; a reading or a lecture is never enough. You need to go
through the sample problems, question what you know and what you don’t, try
working on some of the exercises on your own – get yourself engaged with the course.
Do not just sit in the course, be part of it! I suggest that you go through the study guide for
the period/concept you are working on before you even start your reading. In this way, your
brain will be actively on the lookout for the concepts you need to be able to perform the
assigned activities. Completion of the course requires a passing numerical grade. This
means that an objective assessment is needed to gauge your learning that is why
assignments and other major course requirements are necessary.

What we can do is to try to find the best way to optimize our learning. There is no one

4 | 17 P a g e Math 53 Course Guide UPVTC DNSM

special sauce in learning, especially when it comes to mathematics. A method that works for
someone may not work well for you. Make it a goal to know how well you learn/what learning
method works best for you. In this way, you will be able to construct the right questions that
can help you clear the fog in your head. This can also help you connect to classmates with
the same learning style and be able to form an effective and collaborative study or mentoring
group.

Math texts are not to be read like a novel. I suggest that you annotate or take down notes as
you go through your readings. Annotating will give you a feeling that you are talking directly
to the book; highlight important points, box important formulas or results, and put question
marks to parts that you find confusing. Most authors skip trivial parts, so it is also helpful to
add comments or trivial details to the solutions of sample problems. If you have internet
access, the LMS has a function that allows you to annotate the rest of the learning resource
documents. If this is not possible, you can do mind maps – a very effective way of
notetaking. There are quite several existing/premade mind maps in the web, but you have to
keep in mind that notetaking is a personal thing. You need to do it with your own hand for the
things written there to make sense.

d. Assignment Guide.
An assignment guide gives detailed instructions and guidelines for your problem sets, long
examinations, and other main requirements as 'assignments.'

Reminder: All course materials can be downloaded from our Learning Management (LMS).
The course pack, including individual components thereof, is intended only for your use in
connection with this course. It is not for distribution or for sale. Permission should be ob-
tained from your instructor for any use other than for what is intended. We should never for-
get and practice the three core values of the University of the Philippines (UP): HONOR,
EXCELLENCE, and SERVICE.

To avoid difficulties in accessing the course pack just in case an unavoidable circumstance
will occur, you can download all the components of your course pack in just one sitting. I
suggest downloading them at the beginning of the first few days of your classes. In this way,
you can study them offline. You will only go online when you are ready to do your other ac-
tivities in the VLE, such as taking the quizzes, submitting your requirements, posting in the
discussion forums, checking announcements, and/or doing other needed activities
online. However, you are encouraged to login and open your LMS regularly for you to be
updated because your teacher may give you a very urgent and important announcements.

Contingency Plan

In case the cancelation of face-to-face classes occurs due to unforeseen events, all sched-
uled face-to-face activities (e.g., review, peer tutorial, examinations, etc.) can also be done
remotely via LMS and other online platforms like zoom and google meet.

Course Requirements

To earn a passing grade in Math 53, you must complete in a satisfactory manner the follow-
ing course requirements:

Course Requirement Weight/Percentage

Problem Sets 25%

Long Exam/s 40%

Class Participation (e.g., forum, check-up 15%

quizzes, oral, collaborative activities, etc.)

Final Exam 20%

Total: 100%
The details of these assignments are given in separate Assignment Guides in the detailed
description of each course requirement.

Course Requirement 1: Problem Sets

For this course, you will have three (3) problem sets. These problem sets can be done by
group or individual. You can choose whether to work on it in a group or individually. If you
work by the group, there must only be 2-3 members per group. These serve as study bud-
dies throughout the semester. If you are comfortable working on your own, that is still okay.
You will receive these problem sets in the course pack. The goal is to assess your mathe-
matical skills at the end of each unit or group of topics. You must show full details of your
solution for each question. Otherwise, you will receive no point on that question.

The detailed instruction for these problem sets is found in the Assignment Guide_Problem
Set file. The problem set questions will be given later with file names below:

Problem Set 1: Limits and Continuity

Problem Set 2: Differentiation
Problem Set 3: Integration

Course Requirement 2: Long Exam/s

There are three (3) major examinations in this course. There are three (3) written major ex-
ams and one (1) final exam. Students are given 2-3 hours to complete these long examina-
tions on a set date. You must be conscious of the time in taking the exam so that you will
successfully finish the exam on or before the time set. All examinations will be conducted in
a face-to-face setup. If unavoidable circumstances may occur, please inform me ahead of
time. Only valid reasons are accepted.

The topics for the exams are:

● First Long Exam: Covers Week 1 - 4
● Second Long Exam: Covers Week 5 – 8
● Third Long Exam: Covers Week 10 – 15

13 | 17 P a g e Math 53 Course Guide UPVTC DNSM

● Final Exam: Covers from the first topic up to the last topic of the course

The detailed instruction for these exams is in the assignment guide, with a file name As-
signment Guide_Exams.
Take note that there will be no make-up exam. This may only happen on a case-to-case ba-
sis and for valid reasons, such as concerning health problems. To avoid this problem, please
make sure to accomplish all the tasks on time, and if you have unforeseen circumstances,
please inform me ahead of time. Any lacking requirements will be marked as zero.

Course Requirement 3: Class Participation

Your class participation comprises check-up quizzes, oral tests, collaborative learning activi-
ties, board work, etc. The check-up quizzes will be accomplished via the LMS. Please be
conscious of the due date. There are also fora in this course that needs to be accomplished
as part of the class participation. Also, all oral tests and collaborative learning activities will
be considered class participation, so ensure that you always attend all the scheduled clas-
ses (face-to-face) or online. Please be participative always. Some of the instructions for
some of the class activities will be given later, especially if face-to-face setup. The descrip-
tions and instructions are in the study guide; if it is in the LMS activity, it is there. There will
be no make-up quizzes or other class participation activities. For every missed activity will
be given zero points.

Final Exam
The coverage for the final exam is from the beginning to the last topic of the course. Final
exams will be given only to those whose class standing is below 3.0 and better. However, if
you want to take the final exam even if you are exempted, it’s still okay. But the grade of
your final exam will be added to your overall standing. This may help the students be given
another chance to reach a better grade if the final exam result is also satisfactory. This
means that you are not required to take the final exam if your total scores for all the require-
ments before the final exam is equal to 3.0 or higher. But, if your grade is 3.0 or better al-
ready, you are given the freedom to take the final exam or not. The separate guide for this
exam is with the file name Assignment Guide_Exams. For those who are exempted from
taking the Final Exam, the 20% which is supposed to be taken from this final exam will be
taken from your long examinations.

Note:
• If you have an unavoidable circumstance that may hinder you from taking the exams and
submitting the requirements. In that case, you must inform me immediately using any
means of communication at your convenience. Otherwise, you may be marked zero (0)
in your lacking requirements.

• All the activities in the study guide should be performed well. Practice exercises are not
required to be submitted but are encouraged to be answered as these may help you as-
sess if you really understood each assigned topic. They may also help you prepare to
answer your problem sets and long examinations.

• Posting in the discussion forum, which includes asking questions, sharing exciting con-
cepts, and answering the answered problem in the practice exercises are encouraged to
be done seriously. This is one way of determining if you really study the lessons consist-
ently.

• Your final grade is based on the course requirements and the corresponding weights.
So, please be reminded that since each component of the course requirements has dif-

14 | 17 P a g e Math 53 Course Guide UPVTC DNSM

ferent weights, it impacts your total grade differently. It is not guaranteed that if you get
perfect or higher scores on one component only, you are already sure that your final
grade is also big and significant. Just take note of the weights of every component. To
get good on your final grades, make sure you have good grades in every component of
the course requirements. Always do your best.

Your overall scores after computing each of the component's scores of the course require-
ments and applying its weights, the scores will be transmuted to the UP-grading system as
follows:

Grading Scale:

Score Grade
[97, 100] 1.0 Excellent

disciplinary tribunal and the penalties if proven guilty may range from suspension to expul-
sion, depending on the gravity of the offense.

Promptness. You are expected to do course work promptly and submit your assignments
within the deadlines set. A time estimate for each activity is given, to help you plan in ad-
vance when to do the activities within the dates indicated for the module. You are advised to
get started early and avoid cramming. It is your responsibility to inform me of your status or

situation while enrolled in this course. You need to find a way to contact me if you are not
able to submit requirements on time. Otherwise, a grade of zero is given for that missed re-
quirement.

Due dates for class requirements are final and non-negotiable unless the course instructor.
unilaterally amends them.

No excuses shall be accepted for tardiness. Part of the discipline that you must learn in
college is discharging your duties and responsibilities promptly and well and taking respon-
sibility and being accountable for your own performance. You also need to develop prepar-
edness for adverse situations and emergencies, which means anticipating possible disrup-
tions and busy times and therefore doing what you can do as soon as possible before these
disruptions occur.

Submissions. Submission of class requirements shall be at the designated schedule (date

and time) and place or platform. This means you must read and carefully follow all instruc-
tions regarding your assignments.

Against Grade Solicitation. The University Code prohibits any form of grade solicitation.
Article 377 of the Code states:
“No student at the University shall solicit directly or indirectly any grade
from his/her professor. Any student violating this rule shall lose credit in
the subject(s) regarding which such solicitation is made, without prejudice
to the filing of a case for disciplinary action.”

Grade solicitation includes asking for a particular grade and negotiating for a higher grade. It
also includes requesting special consideration in the form for example of suspensions or ex-
tensions of deadlines, directly or through a representative (e.g. the Student Council, par-
ents), where such special consideration shall redound to or result in obtaining a grade for the
course.

Consultation. The course instructor shall be available for consultation with students within
the official class schedule and the indicated consultation hours. You may send an email or
message off hours but do not expect an immediate reply. You may also request a synchro-
nous consultation if you feel that you need it. To do this, send a request to your course in-
structor via email stating your requested date and time and the reason you need the consul-
tation, and wait for the response/confirmation.

Courtesy. You are expected to be courteous in all your dealings with the course instructor,
your classmates, and any and all persons you interact with during and in relation to this
course. Courtesy means being polite, civil, and considerate. This includes the following:
1. In all of your communications (including posts and private messages), address the
intended recipient correctly (e.g., ‘Dear Prof. Surname’ or ‘Dear classmates’) and you
must indicate your name in closing. Never address your professors or instructors by
their first name even with their title.
2. When arguing a point, do so logically/rationally, stick to the facts, and avoid name
calling or casting aspersions on others.
3. Avoid microaggressions (e.g., veiled insults, sarcastic remarks, insensitive comments
– in short, behaving like a jerk) as well as outright attacks on others.
4. On the other hand, avoid being overly sensitive, taking things personally, and taking
offense. Give people the benefit of the doubt – this is also part of courtesy and civili-
ty.
5. Take responsibility for what you know and don’t know, and all of your actions (which
includes inaction). An example of taking responsibility is checking the dictionary and

reading things over if there are words or expressions or statements (in the course
guide, readings, discussion) that you do not understand. This is part of academic citi-
zenship.

Note that the course pack provided to you in any form is intended only for your use in
connection with the course that you are enrolled in. It is not for distribution or sale.
Permission should be obtained from your instructor for any use other than for what it
is intended.

Graduate: Master of Science in Applied Mathematics (Track: Life and
Physical Sciences/Mathematical Biology)

I am Racquel U. Tabornal, an assistant professor of Mathematics in the Division of Natural

Sciences and Mathematics, UPVTC. I will be your instructor for this semester. I believe in
the saying of Paul Halmos which is, “The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathe-
matics”.

So, please practice and study well. Practice will not make us perfect but indeed, it will make
us progress. I suggest that you should study the reading materials first to familiarize the con-
tent and the flow of the discussion. If there are topics that are difficult for you to understand,
ask help from your study buddies or have a consultation with me.

Math for you, Math for me!

Math is for everyone.
It is sometimes hard, sometimes easy.
But always there is fun!
You do it by learning, you learn it by doing.
Practice is the key!
Yes! Practice is the key!

All of us can do math if we don’t limit ourselves. Let us give math a chance.
Oh! The thinks you can think up, if only you try! – Dr. Seuss.
