Chap 4 RVSF

1) The document describes a method called Reducible to Variables Separated From (R.V.S.F.) to solve first order differential equations that are not directly solvable by variable separation. 2) It involves making a substitution, such as ax + by + c = v, to reduce the differential equation into a form where the variables are separable. 3) Once in separable form, the variables can be integrated separately to obtain the solution to the original differential equation.

Reducible to Variables Separated From (R.V.S.F.

)
Differential equation of the first order cannot be solved directly by variable separable method. But by
some substitution, we can reduce it to a differential equation with separable variable. Let the differential
equation is of the form
dy
= f(ax + by + c)
dx
Can be reduced to variable separable form by the substitution ax + by + c = v
Then
dy dv
a+b
=
dx dx
dy 1 dv
⇒ = ( − a)
dx b dx
Then the equation becomes
1 dv
( − a) = f(v)
b dx
dv
⇒ = a + bf(v)
dx
In which the variables are separable.

Solve
𝐝𝐲
= (𝟒𝐱 + 𝐲 + 𝟏)𝟐 dv
𝐝𝐱 ⇒ = V2 + 4
Put dx
dv
4x + y + 1 = v ⇒ V2 +4 = dx
dy dv [Which is reducible to variable separable form]
⇒4+ = Now integrate this we get
dx dx
dy dv dv
∫ V2 +4 = ∫ dx
⇒ = −4
dx dx 1 v
Then the given DE becomes ⇒ 2 tan−1 2 = x + c
dv 1 4x+y+1
− 4 = v2 ⇒ 2 tan−1 2 = x + c
dx This is the required solution of the given DE.

Exercise: solve the following DE using RVSF

dy x+y−a dy x+y+a
(i) = sin(x + y) + cos(x + y) (v) (x+y−b) dx = (x+y+b)
dx
dy dy
(ii) (x − y)2 = a2 (vi) = (x + y)2
dx dx
2 dy dy
(iii) (x + y) = a2 (vii) = (3x + y + 4)2
dx dx
dy
(iv) = sec(x + y)
dx
