Assignment 1Networking Your Name

You are a Network Engineer and you have been asked to set up a LAN Network for a library. You will
simulate this network using Cisco Packet Tracer software. Save the packet as YourName_CCP1/2/3

Step 1

Create a Local Area Network using Packet Tracer Software


● In the left hand corner select ‘End Devices’ and choose 8 PC’s
● Choose a Switch
● Choose a Server
● Connect all your PC’s to the Switch using a Straight Through Cable
● Choose FastEthernet at each PC and connect to the Switch (choose the next FastEthernet
port) for each connection
● Server to Switch is also a Straight Through Cable
● IP Addresses –
⮚ Label the Server – 192.168.1.254
⮚ Label the first PC – 192.168.1.101
⮚ Select the Server - go to Config – Interface – FastEthernet – (Make sure it is ‘On’ –
Static is selected) – IP Address: 192.168.1.254 – Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
⮚ Select the first PC - go to Config – Interface – IP Address: 192.168.1.101 - Subnet
Mask: 255.255.255.0
● Run tests (Ping) between the Client and the Server to test connectivity
⮚ Select the PC – go to Desktop – Command Prompt – Run a Ping Command
Ping 192.168.1.254
You should get a reply and your addressing is correct from the PC to the Server

⮚ CONFIGURE AND LABEL the other 7 pcs with the next available IP addresses and
subnet masks in the same way you did the first pc

● Select the Server –> Go to services


● Select FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
● Make sure it is ‘On’ (There is a user built in to it)
● Add a new User
⮚ UserName: student Password: student
⮚ Give that person Read and Write permissions
● Select add

⮚ You should now see your new user.

● Test this from the Client


● Open the PC – Desktop – Web Browser – Type in IP address of the server (192.168.1.254)
● The page below should open:

● Close the Web Browser


● Open the Command Prompt
● Now we will FTP the Server
▪ Pc>Ftp 192.168.1.254 (Enter)
● UserName: student Password: student
● You should receive a logged on result, then exit.

Step 4

Adding to the Network


● Choose a Wireless Router
● Add the IP Address to it’s label 192.168.1.1

*To ensure that it is on the same network routers always get the first address on the network

● Choose a cloud for the internet

● Automatically, choose your own type of cable and connect to the Internet from the
router
● From the Router to the Internet

Now when you hover over the Router you will see:

It is going to the Internet port

● Auto select a cable and choose the next available Ethernet port on the switch to
Ethernet port 1 on the Router

Step 5

The Router Configuration

● At the back of the router you will see:


The brown are for Ethernet, LAN ports
The blue is the Internet, WAN port (Goes to a separate ISP network)

Test from the PC to the Router


● Select the PC
● Open the Command Prompt and type:
● Pc>ping 192.168.1.1 (Enter) (Insert screenshot of result below)
Type command quit if still in ftp mode
If successful you now have a gateway to our network

● Go back to the Desktop – IP Configuration


● Add the Router as the Default Gateway

● Set the server gateway in the same way (using the router address)

Step 8

Adding More Services to Our Web Server


● Open the Server ->Services ->HTTP
● Change “Cisco Packet Tracer” to “YourName.com” in the HTML

● Open the Server->Services->DNS


● In Resources Records/Name: YourName.com
● Address: 192.168.1.254
● “Add” it

● Turn the DNS Service “On”


● Open the PC->IP Configuration->Change to “Static”
● Reset IP Address to: 192.168.1.101, Subnet will default
● Put gateway as new router: 192.168.1.1
● DNS Server: 192.168.1.254
● Open the Web Browser – type in YourName.com
