Math 2

This document provides information about exponents, squares, square roots, order of operations, factors, and prime and composite numbers. It defines exponents as a base number multiplied by itself a certain number of times indicated by the exponent. Squares are numbers that can be expressed as the product of two identical factors. The square root of a number is the number that when multiplied by itself equals the original number. It also defines prime numbers as having only two factors and composite numbers as having more than two factors.

SQUARE ROOT
The square root of a number, such as 49, is the number
that, when multiplied by itself, produces 49.
The square root of 49 is 7
since 7 multiplied by itself
produces 49

This is the symbol for a square root

FACTORS AND
DIVISIBILITY
A factor is a number that, when multiplied by
another number, produces a third number called
a product.
Think of all the numbers that multiply together
to produce 24:

1 x 24 2 x 12 24 is divisible by all of these numbers.

They are the factors of 24.
3x8 4x6 1,2,3,4,6,8,12,24
PRIME AND COMPOSITE
NUMBERS
PRIME NUMBERS

A prime number has only two factors meaning

that only two numbers will multiply together to
produce that number. (1 and the number itself)

1 x 17 = 17
1 and 17 are the only numbers that multiply
together to produce 17. Therefore, 17 is a
prime number.
PRIME AND COMPOSITE
NUMBERS
COMPOSITE NUMBERS

A composite number is a number with two or more

factors.

1x8=8 2x4=8
1,2,4, and 8 are all factors of 8. Therefore 8 is a
composite number.
