. If a DNS packet is lost, there is no automatic recovery. Does this cause a problem, and if so, how is it solved? The only problem this creates is some additional time waiting for a response. However, when a DNS request is lost the requesting machine simply assumes that the Name Server contacted does not know the requested information. The requesting machine then sends a request to a backup Name Server with a second request. Problem 7 Can a machine with a single DNS name have multiple IP addresses? How could this occur? Yes. If a machine has multiple network connections each connection has its own IP address which can then be referenced through multiple resource records on the Name Server. Problem 15 Name five MIME types not listed in the book. You can check your browser or the Internet for information. Application/hyperstudio Audio/GSM Image/cgm Test/sgml Video/quicktime Problem 21 From an ISPs point of view, POP3 and IMAP differ in an important way. POP3 users generally empty their mailboxes every day. IMAP users keep their mail on the server indefinitely. Imagine that you were called in to advise an ISP on which protocol it should support. What considerations would you bring up? You would need to discuss the volume of mail expected so that you can determine storage needs if using IMAP. Also what type of usage do the majority of the subscribers use? Is the subscriber mail being accessed from multiple machines for each user or is it being accessed from a single machine for each user. Problem 23 When Web pages are sent out, they are prefixed by MIME headers. Why? The MIME headers tell the browser what type of file is contained on the Web page and also what type of helper application or plug-in needs to be used to display the content. Problem 45 A compact disc holds 650 MB of data. Is compression used for audio CDs? Explain
your reasoning. Compression is not used for audio CDs. Compression is used on the data that can be stored on the CD thus increasing the amount of data on the CD. CD quality audio requires 1.411 Mbps of bandwidth which leads me to the point that the compression is not used on the CD. The data on a CD is compressed so that it can transmission over the internet is practical. Problem 48 An audio streaming server has a one-way distance of 50 msec with a media player. It outputs at 1 Mbps. If the media player has a 1-MB buffer, what can you say about the position of the low-water mark and the high-water mark? The low water mark must be higher than the amount of data that can be played in 50 msec so that buffer underrun does not occur and the high water mark must be at a point that is more than the amount of data that can be played in 50 msec below the 1 MB mark so that buffer overrun does not occur. Problem 51 What is the bit rate for transmitting uncompressed 800x600 pixel color frames with 8 bits/pixel at 40 frames/sec? The bit rate for this transmission would be 154 Mbps. Problem 53 Consider a 100,000-customer video server, where each customer watches two movies per month. Half the movies are served at 8 P.M. How many movies does the server have to transmit at once during this time period? If each movie requires 4 Mbps, how many OC12 connections does the server need to the network. This server would need 336,456 OC-12 connections to supply the needed bandwidth.
