Advocacy Script For Gender Equality

Gender inequality persists globally as women still earn less than men and are more likely to live in poverty. Achieving gender equality requires sustained efforts to promote equal access to opportunities and end discrimination against women. The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal 5 outlines nine targets to achieve gender equality, including ending all forms of discrimination and violence against women, ensuring women's equal rights and access to resources, and promoting their participation in leadership and decision-making. Governments have a critical role to play through implementing relevant laws and policies, promoting awareness, and providing education and healthcare equally to all individuals to foster a more equitable society regardless of gender.

Good [insert time] everyone.

Today, I will be discussing the important topic of gender

equality but before I begin, let me share some facts about our topic. Did you know that women still
earn 23% less than men and are more likely to live in poverty? Gender equality is a fundamental
human right that states that everyone should have equal access to different opportunities regardless of
their gender.

Achieving gender equality is not only about justice and fairness, but it also plays an essential
role in promoting sustainable development. Sustainable Development Goal 5 aims to achieve gender
equality, and it has nine targets that address various aspects of gender inequality, such as
discrimination, violence, harmful practices, access to economic resources, and more. Achieving these
targets requires sustained and comprehensive actions with the help of governments, civil society, and
individuals.
These are the nine targets of the Sustainable Development Goal number 5
1. End all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere
2. Eliminate all forms of violence against all women and girls in the public and private
spheres, including trafficking and sexual and other types of exploitation
3. Eliminate all harmful practices, such as child, early, and forced marriage and female genital
mutilation
4. Recognize and value unpaid care and domestic work through the provision of public
services, infrastructure, and social protection policies and the promotion of shared responsibility within
the household and the family as nationally appropriate
5. Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all
levels of decision-making in political, economic, and public life
6. Ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights as agreed
in accordance with the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and
Development and the Beijing Platform for Action and the outcome documents of their review
conferences
7. Undertake reforms to give women equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to
ownership and control over land and other forms of property, financial services, inheritance, and
natural resources in accordance with national laws
8. Enhance the use of enabling technology, in particular, information and communications
technology, to promote the empowerment of women
9. Adopt and strengthen sound policies and enforceable legislation for the promotion of
gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls at all levels

When someone is not given the same opportunities as others, it harms not only the individual
but also the people around them. In this kind of situation, it is our responsibility to attract everyone in
our quest for progress and prosperity. Therefore, it is imperative that we promote gender equality and
create a world where gender doesn’t define a person’s worth and opportunities.

We must end gender stereotypes and gender biases that restrict opportunities for people. We
must create an environment where each of us is valued based on our talents and abilities, and not just
our gender. Governments have critical roles to fulfill in promoting gender equality. They should take
several actions to address the issue of gender inequality, including implementing laws that aim to
protect the rights of any individual that promotes gender equality. This includes laws that prohibit
violation of rights based on gender, such as equal pay, anti-discrimination, gender-based violence and
harassment laws, and more.

Governments can also create programs and policies that support economic empowerment
regardless of gender by providing funds and support for businesses. For women, policies that
acknowledge women's participation in male-dominated industries should also be implemented.
Education and healthcare should also be equally provided to all individuals. Education helps us acquire
knowledge and skills that lead to better opportunities and good decision-making. While improved
healthcare access can help us live healthier and more productive lives, leading to better performances
and outcomes that benefit not only ourselves and our families but also the society we live in.

To visualize these actions, governments can create awareness campaigns to educate the public
regarding the importance of gender equality. In addition, workshops and seminars can also be
conducted to train officials and stakeholders on gender-sensitive policies and practices. Gender equality
is a shared responsibility that requires sustained collaboration between governments and individuals.
The aforementioned actions must be sustained to ensure that this advocacy is effective enough to
address gender inequality and create a more equitable society.

As individuals, it is also our responsibility to fight for our rights. By working together, we can
create a world where everyone, regardless of gender, has an opportunity to use their voices, talents, and
capabilities to prove their worth and place in society. Thank you.
