Year 10 Revision Sheet

English

You will have both a written and listening exam. The written exam will be a full IGCSE paper and
will take 2 hours to complete. It is worth 80 marks.

You will also complete a listening exam which will be 50 minutes long and is worth 40 marks.

What you need to revise to be successful


Reading:

 Read fiction and non-fiction texts independently or with a parent/helper/friend


(this can include magazines, instructions, articles, news reports, letters, etc).
 Complete word searches to practise locating and retrieving (you can time yourself).
 Comprehension practice online.
 Use BBC Bitesize or www.skillsworkshop to revise for reading and writing.

Writing:

 Revise sentence structuring – practise writing simple, complex and compound sentence
 Focus on subject/verb agreement and ensure you are consistent with your tenses
 Revise the ‘Show Don’t Tell’ technique
 Practise more interesting ways to start your sentences (adjective, verb, adverb, etc)
 Learn a range of connectives (however, in addition, moreover, on the other hand, finally, etc)
 Look at vocabulary lists online and practise using MORE AMBITIOUS words in sentences
 Find synonyms for common words: Nice, big, small, happy, sad, tired, young, old etc
 Learn a variety of prepositions
 Practise using punctuation: ! - :; “ “ ‘ BECAUSES
 Revision TOP TIPS for formal letters – Layout (Addresses; date in full; greetings; introduction-keep it
simple and state the reason for writing clearly; body- include all the relevant details by giving reasons
for writing in paragraphs; conclusion- state your expectations; correct closing- faithfully if you
begin with Sir/Madam or sincerely if you begin with a name)
 Use genre (type of text-letter, news report, article, etc); audience (who you are writing
for); purpose (why you are writing- to persuade, complain, inform, etc) to dissect your writing task.
