2022-2023 Quarterly Lockdown Drills Monthly Calendar
1 08/19 8:45 Scenario: A student reports to his teacher that he saw his friend showing a
1st Period gun to another friend on the bus. The student that brought the gun did not
report to homeroom for attendance and morning announcements. The school
proceeds with lockdown procedures.
2 11/21 12:30 Scenario: There has been unusual activity in the nearby community. A staff
5th member in the parking lot has seen a masked man running in close proximity
Period to the school and contacts the police. The school proceeds to secure the
building and activates lockdown procedures.
3 02/23 11:30 Scenario: A group of students have created a social media page and have been
4th sending messages of a plan to attack two teachers using weapons. The date
Period and the time has not been revealed and one of the students did not attend
classes. For the safety of the students and teachers, the school proceeds with
lockdown procedures.
4 05/05 2:45 Scenario: Fifteen minutes before dismissal an impatient parent in the car line
8th demands to have his son dismissed right away. The staff member replies and
Period explains that he has to wait. The parent leaves his car and runs to the front
office with what appears to be a black metal object. The school goes on
lockdown.
In the event of an evacuation of the entire school, the staff and students will hold in classrooms
until an announcement is made to evacuate the building. All staff, teachers and students will exit
the building and be directed to the nearby church. Students will be transported by bus to the
church site. This plan can be located in the front office. Parents will be notified through the
school messenger system. Additional teachers have Classdojo app set up to communicate with
families. Additionally, the SERT Team will assume their task and responsibilities.
Revisiting/Debriefing After Fire Drill
After each fire drill is important that administrators and the team debrief. In the debrief, it is
vital to review the growth and glow. It is important that the team observed what was done. It
would definitely contribute to plans for improvement. After discussing and coming up with
different strategies, the teachers will be informed so that they can make adjustments accordingly.
Training for Teachers will take place during Pre-Planning Week. The rationale for this is to
ensure that teachers are aware of protocols, procedures and become familiar with the plans
before school begins. All teachers will receive a drill and evacuation folder with all exit routes
(primary, secondary and alternative), severe weather procedures, lockdown and drill procedures.
This folder is to be carried with them in a drill and students’ contact information should be
placed in all folders. In the professional training administration will explain the process and the
responsibility of all personnel on school campus. It is important that each teacher knows what
each lock down means as it relates to the district. The district will have virtual training during
this time about fire drills and lockdowns. There will be a Self-Pace Canvas course for all staff.
To add to this, the office staff, administration and those on the SWAT team will complete an
additional training, as their role and responsibilities would be different from classroom teachers
In this plan it was important to ensure that the schedule of the dates did not conflict with testing
dates. Therefore, the testing coordinator along with administration would collaborate.
A separate calendar should be set up for administration only with the drills. It is important to
conduct drills to prepare the school in an event that something really happens. The vision of
Millennia Elementary school is to ensure every student has a promising and successful future.
The mission states that with the support of families and the community, we create enriching and
diverse pathways that lead our students to success” (2022). A learning environment should be
safe and all students should be protected. The Professional Standards for Educational Leaders
guides and reminds effective leaders of ensuring the safety and welfare of all students (2015). To
add to this, it is our legal and moral responsibility to protect students. By law and by district
policies monthly drills must be conducted and recorded. The Orange County School District
gives all schools date ranges and different drills that must be completed in that timeframe. Safety
is top priority.
