MATHEMATICS 10
QUIZ on COMBINATIONS

NAME:S SONGCUYA, Mia Mariel G. SCORE: _____________

Grade and Section: 10-OPTIMISM

PART I. Permutation or Combination. Determine whether each situation involves a permutation or a

combination. Write P for permutation and C for combination on the space provided.

P 1. Introducing 6 starting players on the SSC High School volleyball team at the beginning of
the next volleyball game.
P 2. Seating 8 students in 8 seats in the front row of the school audio visual room.
C 3. Checking out 3 library books from a list of 8 books for a research paper.

C 9. Selecting 2 of the 9 kittens at an animal rescue shelter.
C 10. Selecting 3 desserts from 10 desserts that are displayed on a dessert cart in a restaurant.

PART II. Problem Solving. Solve the following problems on combinations. Show your complete solutions.

1. The High School Library is thinking of implementing a new rule that you can only borrow a
maximum of 3 fictional books before your Modular Examination days.

a. If this will be implemented, how many choices of fictional books to read can be made from
their set of 97 fictional books available?
97!
97C3 = (97−3)! 3!
= 147 440 147 440 choices

b. Explain why this problem is a Combination and not a Permutation problem.

This is a Combination problem simply because order doesn’t matter. Here if the max is 3
books to borrow then meaning they have about 97 choices of fictional books and they could choose any
from it meaning the order of books doesn’t matter.

2. 60 people attended the soiree organized by your class officers. Your first activity is to shake
hands once, with all the people inside the room and say one word that describes yourself best.
How many handshakes will take place in the room?

60!
60C60 = (60−1)! 1!
= 60 60 handshakes

3. There are 4 kinds of meat and 10 veggies available to make wraps at the school cafeteria. How
many possible wraps have 1 kind of meat and 3 veggies?

4! 10!
4C1 = (4−1)! 1!
=4 10C3 = (10−3)!3!
= 120

4C1 x 10C3 = 4 x 120 = 480 480 possible ways

4. There are 15 Grade 7 and Grade 10 students in the Math Club. The club is to send 4
representatives to the Math Competition.

a. How many different ways are there to select a group of 4 students to attend the Math
Competitions?

15!
15C4 = (15−4)!4!
= 1 365 1 365 ways to select

b. If the members of the club decide to send 2 Grade 7 and 2 Grade 10, how many different
groupings are possible?

15!
15C2 = (15−2)!2!
= 105

15C2 x 15C2 = 105 x 105 = 11 025 11 025 different groupings

5. A Mac cart of 40 ipads contains 5 defective. In how many ways can you select 10 ipads such that

a. The defective ipads are not included

35!
35C10 = (35−10)!10!
= 183 579 396 183 579 396 ways

b. Only 1 defective ipad is included

35! 5!
35C9 = (35−9)!9!
= 70 607 460 5C1 = (5−1)!1!
=5

35C9 x 5C1 = 70 607 460 x 5 = 353 037 300 353 037 300 ways

c. Atleast 2 defective ipads are included.

5! 35!
5C2 = (5−1)!1!
= 10 35C8 = (35−8)!8!
= 23 535 820

5! 35!
5C4 = (5−4)!4!
=5 35C6 = (35−6)!6!
= 1 623 160

(5C2 x 35C8) + (5C4 x 35C6) = (10 x 23 535 820) + (5 x 1 623 160) = (235 358 200)

+ (8 115 800) = 243 474 000 243 474 000 ways
