Task Sheet 2.1-2 Network Cabling

The document provides instructions for configuring client devices on a local area network (LAN). It outlines 7 steps to: 1) set the date and time on Windows 10 devices, 2) name each computer, 3) configure the network interface to assign static IP addresses like 192.168.1.10 to each device, 4) open the network sharing center and properties to access TCP/IP settings. Completing these steps ensures each client device on the LAN has a unique name and IP address to enable communication and connectivity testing between all computers on the network.

Task Sheet 2.

1-3

Title: Creating LAN Cabling

Performance Objective: Given the following materials, you should be able to create cable. Allotted time 30 minutes.

Supplies/ Materials: UTP cable, RJ-45, Crimping tool, Wire Stripper and LAN Tester

Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Networking

Steps/Procedure:

Step 1- Strip cable end

 Strip 1 – 1 ½ of insulating sheath

 Avoid cutting into conductor insulation

Step 2- Untwist wire ends

 Unwind and pair the similar colors

Step 3- Arrange wires

 Pinch the wires between your fingers and straighten them out as shown. The color order is important to get
correct
Step 4- Trim wire to size
 Trim all wires evenly
 Leave about ½ of wires exposed
Step 5- Attach connector
 Maintain wire order, left-to-right, with RJ-45 tab facing downward.
Step 6- Check
 Carefully push all 8 unstripped colored wires into the connector. Note the position of the blue plastic sleeve.
Also note how the wires go all the way to the end.
Step 7- Crimp
 Squeeze firmly to crimp connecter
onto cable end (8P)
Step 8- Test
 Make sure to test the cables before installing them. An inexpensive cable tester does this quite well.

Safety precaution
 Make sure that the tools you are using are in good working condition.

 Always be on task.

 Be vigilant.

 Follow the steps prescribed.

Title: SETTING-UP IP ADDRESS

Performance Objective: Given the following materials, you should be able to assign IP addresses and test the
connectivity. Allotted time 30 minutes.

Supplies/ Materials: UTP cable and hub/switch

Equipment: 2 computer with enable LAN connection

Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Networking, Ethernet cable configuration (t68a and t68b)

Steps/Procedure:

1. Read information sheet 2.2-5 IP Addressing

2. Connect your 2 computer directly to your hub/switch
3. Assign an ip address for each 2 computer
Where:
Computer 1 IP address=
Computer 2 IP address=
4. Open command prompt then type ipconfig to check the result in both computers.
5. Test node connectivity by pinging the computer’s ip address. Stay on the command and type the following
Eg. Computer 1 ping 192.168.1.10
Computer 2 ping 192.168.1.11

Title: Configure Client Device System

Performance Objective: Given the following materials, you should be able to configure client device system. Allotted
time 30 minutes.

Supplies/ Materials: UTP cable and hub/switch

Equipment: 2 computer with enable LAN connection

Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Networking, Ethernet cable configuration (t68a and t68b) and IP ddressing

Steps/Procedure:

1. Read information sheet 2.3.1 Configure Client Device System

2. Setting-up time and date
a. On windows 10 OS, to set up the Time and date go to the right bottom of your taskbar see figure below:

b. Right click on the area of time and date then choose “Adjust date/time”. Then the date/time settings will
appear.

c. If you wish to set your date/time automatically just click “ON” at “Set time automatically”. If not, you can
turn it off and be the one to set date/time.
d. You could also set “Time Zone” it is located below change date and time. You could choose Beijing, Lumpur
or Taipei ,Philippines is none on the choices just choose a Time Zone that much on our time “UTC+8”.
3. Set up Computer Name
a. In setting up your Computer Name, Go to Start Menu and search for “ My PC”/This PC”, and other Windows
OS version you can find it on Desktop a computer icon with a name of “ My computer”. For windows 10, please see
figure below
b. Then, “Control Panel” will appear. Click on “Change Settings” button that is shown below:

c. After clicking “Change Settings”, another Set up will appear. You can now change the “Computer
Description” and “Computer Name”. As shown on figure below:

Note: Setting up your Computer Name is important. This will serve as the Identity of your computer. It will be
useful when it comes on setting up your Computer network. The Server/ Network will identify what PC is being
connected or configured.
4. Configure network
To configure the network on your pc , right click on your network connection. You’ll see this in your system tray.
If you are connecting your computers to a switch with no router, you will need to assign each computer to the network
its own individual IP address. This process is handled automatically if your using a router. Think of an IP address as a
mailing address. Each computer on the network needs a unique IP address so that information sent across the network
reaches the correct destination.

Click open a network-sharing center

Click the ethernet link at the top of the window. You’ll see next “Connection”. Click properties.

Click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPV4). Make sure you don’t uncheck it, just highlight it.

Click the use the following IP address radio button.

Example type 192.168.1.10 into the IP adddress field.

Type 255.255.255.0 into the subnet mask field.

Type the default gateway example 192.168.1.1 into the field. Type the preferred DNS server the ip address of the
server. Then click ok. This will save the settings for that computer. This computer is now configured on your network
with the unique ip address.

Open the Protocol Version 4 properties on the next computer. Follow the steps above on the computer to
open the Internet Protocol Version (TCP/IPV4) Properties window.
