TITLE : SERIES PARALLEL CIRCUIT

1.0 OBJECTIVES

1.1 Able to construct series parallel circuit using ThinkerCad online circuit simulation
1.2 Determine the voltage drop across the resistor using calculation and meter reading
method (ThinkerCad online circuit simulation)
1.3 Determine the current of the circuit using calculation and meter reading method
(ThinkerCad online circuit simulation)

2.0 INTRODUCTION

2.1 SERIES CIRCUIT

a. The total resistor in series circuit equals the sum of each resistor in the circuit added

together. This can be stated as, RT = R1 + R2 + R3 +……… + Rn

b. The current across each resistor is same with the total current or circuit current.

This can be stated as, IT = I1 = I2= I3= ……… = In

c. The total voltage is the sum of voltage drop across each resistor.

This can be stated as, VT = V1 + V2 + V3 +………Vn

Meanwhile, the voltage drop across each resistor can be calculated using Ohm’s Law as,

V1 = ITR1
V2 = ITR2
V3 = ITR3
Vn = ITRn

d. The voltage across each resistor can also be determine using the Voltage Divider Rule as
stated below:
V1 = (R1 / R1 + R2) x VT and V2 = (R2 / R1 + R2) x VT

2.2 PARALLEL CIRCUIT

a. The voltage across any parallel branch or component is the same for each branch in

parallel. This can be stated, Vs = V1 = V2 = V3 = ……… = Vn

d. The sum of the current into a junction equals the sum of the currents leaving the

junction. This can be stated, IT = I1 + I2+ I3 + ……… + In

e. Each time a resistor is added in parallel to a parallel circuit, the total current increase.
The total resistance of resistors in parallel is always smaller than the smallest resistor in
parallel. This can be stated,

f. The current value for each branch using Current Divider Rule :

I1 = ( R2 / R1 + R2) x IT and I2 = ( R1 / R1 + R2) x IT

3.2 Breadboard

3.3 Multimeter

3.4 DC Power Supply

3.5 Wire/Cable

4.0 PROCEDURES

a) Construct the series parallel circuit as shown in Figure 1.

b) Check the wire connection to ensure all the equipment are connected properly.

c) Set the source voltage 10Vdc from DC Power Supply.

d) Use the calculation method to determine the value of voltage drop across resistor

R1 (VR1) and total current (IT).

e) Measure the value of voltage drop across resistor R1 (VR1) and total current (IT)

using multimeter. Fill in the Table 1.
