Wind & Seismic Design
SEE ADDED 4. Seismic forces per CBC 1613 and ASCE 7-16.
SHEET S-1 5. Wind design using exposure C shall be based on the following procedures:
a. ASCE 7-16 chapters 26-30
b. CBC chapter 1609
6. Seismic design shall be based on the following procedures:
a. Equivalent Lateral Force Procedure, ASCE 7-16, 12.8:
i) Design the SFRS using redundancy factor of 1.3 per ASCE 7-16, Section 12.3.4
ii) For structures in Seismic Design Categories D, E, F having horizontal or vertical
structural irregularities of types indicated in Section 12.3.3.4.
iii) In using/applying formulas of Basic Combinations for Allowable Stress Design with
Over Strength Factor, allowable effects of horizontal seismic forces QE (0.7E) shall
be converted to design strength (1.0E). ASCE 7-16, 12.4.3.
iv) All parts of the structure between separation joints shall be interconnected and the
connection shall be capable of transferring the seismic force, Fp, induced by the
part connected. Any smaller portion of the structure shall be tied to the remainder
of the structure based on the strength specified in ASCE 7-16, 12.1.3.
b. Simplified Design Procedure, ASCE 7-16, 12.14:
i) All parts of the structure between separation joints shall be interconnected and the
connection shall be capable of transferring the seismic force, Fp, induced by the
part connected. Any smaller portion of the structure shall be tied to the remainder
of the structure based on the strength specified in ASCE 7-16,12.14.7.1.
ii) Provide reinforcement for openings and reentrant corners per ASCE 7-16
&12.14.7.2.
7. Shear Wall Design:
a. Provide a layout plan in the calculations.
b. Where shear design values exceed 350 p.l.f., foundation sill plates and all framing
members receiving edge nailing from abutting panels shall not be less than a single 3x
nominal member. Nails shall be staggered.
c. Provide maximum 5/8" diameter steel bolts embedded 7 inches into the foundation with
minimum 3" x 3" x 0.229" thick plate washer (CRC 602.11.1) for the anchor bolts.
Allowable shear per AWC 2018 NDS Table 12E (CBC 1905.1.8) exception 1.
8. Provide design of the shear wall hold downs.
9. Hold downs are required for shear walls with any uplift force.
10. Provide details of the hold down system on the plans.
11. Horizontal diaphragm and chords and collectors.
