M7 Q1L1.3 Sets (Equal Set and Equivalent Set, and Null Set)

This lesson plan introduces sets to 7th grade mathematics students. It defines equal sets as sets with the same elements and equivalent sets as sets with the same number of elements but not necessarily the same elements. An empty or null set is defined as a set with no elements. Examples are provided to illustrate equal sets, equivalent sets, and the empty set. Students will practice identifying equal and equivalent sets in examples and write their own examples from real life. For assessment, students will determine if sets are equal or equivalent and identify empty sets in multiple choice and short answer questions.

SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 7

I Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
A. differentiate equal and equivalent set.
B. determine a null set.
II Subject Matter

IV Procedure
A. Preparation
 Greetings
 Prayer
 Checking of Attendance
 Setting the class mode and environment
 Checking of prior knowledge

B. Lesson Proper / Presentation

After the students answer the motive question, the teacher will present the lesson
about equal and equivalent set, and null set.
Equal Sets and Equivalent Sets
Equal sets are sets which have exactly the same elements and hence, have the
same cardinality. On the other hand, equivalent sets are sets with the same cardinality
but not necessarily have the same elements.
The symbol “=” is use to show that two sets are equal and “≈” to denote that two
sets are equivalent.
Example:
R = {5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30}
T = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}
W = {20, 30, 10, 5, 15, 25}
Since n(R) = n(T) but their elements are not exactly the same then we say that R
and T are equivalent sets. Then, R≈T.
On the other hand, the elements of R and W are exactly the same, and n(R) =
n(W). They are said to be equal sets. Then R=W.
Empty Set or Null Set
An empty set or a null set, denoted by Ꝋ or { }, is a set with no elements. The null
set is a subset of any set.
Example:
S = {x|x is a square with 5 sides}
S={}=Ꝋ
n(S) = 0
B = {x|x is a month of the year with 35 days}
B=Ꝋ
C. Generalization / Application
The students will try to write their own equal and equivalent set that they
encounter in real life.

D. Evaluation
In a one whole sheet of paper, the students will answer the following.
I. State whether each pair of sets given below are Equal Sets or Equivalent Sets.
1. {3, 5, 7} and {5, 3, 7}
2. {8, 6, 10, 12} and {3, 2, 4, 6}
3. {7, 7, 2, 1, 2} and {1, 2, 7}
4. {1 4, 9, 16, 25} and {12, 22, 32, 42, 52}
5. {2, 4, 6, 8, 1} and {a, b, d, e, m}
II. Which of the following sets are empty?
1. Set of counting numbers between 5 and 6.
2. Set of odd numbers between 7 and 19.
3. Set of odd numbers between 7 and 9.
4. Set of even numbers which are not divisible by 2.
5. {0}

E. Assignment
On a one whole sheet of paper, the students need to state if the following sets are
equal or equivalent set.
1. {x : x is an odd natural number less than 8} and {x : x is a letter in the word
‘girl’}
2. {5, 5, 2, 4} and {5, 4, 2, 2}
3. {x : x is a letter in the word STRAND} and {x : x is a letter in the word
STANDARD}
4. {x : x is a month having 33 days} and {x : x is a year having 360 days }
5. {x : x = p + 2, p ∈ N and p < 5} and {13, 14, 15, 16}
