MODBUS Ups

The document describes the transparent mode and Modbus communication features of an FP-AC-UPS front panel. It provides details on the Modbus protocol, configuration settings, and data registers for monitoring rectifier, battery, inverter, output, alarms and status values. 16. TRANSPARENT MODE

In this mode the panel behaves as if the user itself is connected directly to the unit
(rectifier or inverter depending of the selectors disposition). This enables direct
communication with the unit. It is possible to receive the data as well as send
commands.

17. MODBUS COMMUNICATION

Protocol MODBUS is a high-level communication protocol (layer 7 of the OSI model)
that defines the format and the communication mode between a “master” and one or
more “slaves”. One master can be connected to up to 247 slave units on a common
line.
The protocol defines: how the master and the slave establish and interrupt the
communication, how the transmitter and the receiver must be identified, the exchange
modality of messages and the error detection technique.
Only the master may start a transaction, which can be of “direct question/answer”
type (with a single slave), or of “broadcast” type, where the message is sent to all the
devices which, in this case, do not send any reply.
The transmission occurs in RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) mode and the end of the
request message to the device is identified by an interval of 100ms where nothing is
received. The questions and the answers have the following structure:

CRC (Cyclical Redundancy

Slave address Function Data
Check)
1 byte 1 byte N byte 2 bytes

The functions made available by the protocol are identified through the codes
contained in the PDU (Protocol Data Unit).
The characteristics defined for the use of the protocol in the application concerned
are the following:
§ • RTU format
§ data è 8 bits
The baudrate, parity, stop bit number and slave address can be selected from menu
SPECIAL à UPS SETTIGNGS à MODBUS SETTINGS. The default value are the
following:
§ two stop bits
§ no parity bit
§ BAUD rate è 9600 bits
§ Address à 1

In order to configure the address (from 1 to 247) the following command is to be

used, sending it through the serial interface: SET MODBUS ADDRESS. There is also a
command which enquires about the address that was already set: GET MODBUS
ADDRESS. Please refer to Apendix "A" in this chapter in order to find futher information
about the use of such command.
The panel software is using the function coded as 03 of the PDU (Holding Register).
When the panel receives this instruction, it responds by sending the data table
described below:

17.1 RS485 – MODBUS CONNECTION

Four poles shielded cable has to be used for MODBUS connection. Shield must be
connected to earth, two wires of the cable must be used for A and B signals and two
wires of the cable must be used for GND as shown on figure 8.

17.2 MODBUS & DCS CONNECTION
To connect MODBUS system to DCS system insert physically at the begin and the
end of the chain two termination resistors of 120 Ohm, closing JP3 of the ModBus
Interface (JP3 closed 120 Ohm termination resistor connected, JP3 open 120 Ohm
termination resistor disconnected).
Usually on the DCS system two resistors have to be installed for channel
polarization, as shown on figure 9.
