A. CHOOSING A SPORT

 Student will choose their ideal/ favorite sport.

 Explain why did you choose that sport.
 What will it benefit you?

SOFTBALL
It is a team sport which played between two teams of
9-10 members, usually played by group of women.
This sport originally came from as development of
indoor baseball, and was introduced in Philippines in
1911 to public school as replacement for basketball.
Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines is the
private organization governing this sport. What do I
like about Softball is that, it reminds me of one of my
favorite outdoor game “Agawan Base” and I have fun
watching it on TV, to an anime series “Major”. I think
among other team sports, I could say this really
depicts the importance of teamwork probably add to
the list on why I chose this sport. Besides, like other
sports, it gives us plenty of benefits. It is good for our
health since this requires lot of skills which may
improves our flexibility. Another thing, it allows our
mind to work like to be a good strategist and possible
for us to establish leadership within our self. It is the
kind of sport that can fully exercise our reaction time,
speed, other health and skill-related component.

B. KNOWING THE SPORT

Choose one sport that you like or have an interest on. It can be individual, dual, and
team sport. Identify the following aspects on each sport.

 Court Dimension
 Equipment and Gears
 Rules of the Game (Summary of the basic rule and intentional body)

COURT DIMENSION

BASE

There are first, second, and third base in the softball field. These bases usually made of canvas
or other similar materials. The distance between each base were 60 feet, while, the thickness of
the material used is 3.5 inches (side view) with 4 equal sides of 15 inches length (top view).
Then, the angle formed is 90˚.

HOME PLATE

It consists of 5 sides made of whitened rubber or other similar materials with 8 ½ inches long.
The sides parallel to the pitcher’s plate is 17 inches wide and the side facing the catcher is 12
inches long. The distance of home plate to second base should be 84 feet or 10.25 inches
(SoftballGalaxy, 2018 June 04). Then, the length of home plate to backstop is 25 or 30 inches.

PITCHER’S MOUND

The length of pitcher’s mound to home plate may or may not 35-43 feet (vary according to the
age of players). While, the pitcher’s circle has length of 16 inches, then, 60 inches to grass line.
The pitching plate (same with home plate) is made of whitened rubber or other similar
materials which measures 24 by 6 inches (SoftballGalaxy, 2018 June 04).

CATCHER’S BOX

The distance from the batter box is approximately 8 ft. 5 inch wide x 10 ft. deep.

BATTER’S BOX

It should have a length of 7 ft. and 3 ft. of front to the home plate.

COACHES BOX

The coaches’ box has a measure of 15 feet wide and 8 feet is the distance from the foul lines.

OUTFIELD FENCES

Distance varies based on players’ age but typically it is 220 ft. for women.

EQUIPMENT AND GEARS

SOFTBALL UNIFORMS
It is consists of jersey or shirt, pants, socks, cap,
belt, shoes with cleat, and belt.

 Jersey/ Shirt are the upper garment

provided by the teams.

 Pants usually about three quarters until

mid-shin paired with socks along with
undergarment sliding short, used to avoid
bruises from sliding.

 Belt is not widely used among softball

players but used if ever the pants too
loose.

 Socks used to protect the knee from

bruises and other wounds players could
get from playing.

 Cap is for head protection and also covers

players from sun rays.

CATCHER’S EQUIPMENT
Made up of helmet, chest protector, leg guards,
and glove.

 Helmet worn to protect catcher’s head

from any head injury since their work is to
give signal and catch the ball.

 Chest Protector obviously from its name

‘chest protector’ this is worn as protective
equipment for catcher’s chest.

 Leg Guards should be flexible so that

catchers can able to move around.

 A glove used by the catcher is rounder and

thicker than ordinary gloves since its
function is to protect the palm/hands from
the intensity the ball has thrown.

PITCHER’S EQUIPMENT

 Ball should measures 3.5 inches in

diameter and 11 inches in circumference
(Rookie Road, n.d.).

BATTER’S EQUIPMENT

 Bat is the primary equipment used for

hitting the ball. Looks like a cylindrical
shape made up of woods or metals with
length approximately not greater than 86
cm.

 Helmet is required if players will do batting

because we can’t determine the direction
of the ball. Head is one of the vital parts of
our body that needs to be safe no matter
what.

 Gloves worn to protect our hand upon

hitting since friction and the power of ball
toss might be risky.

FIELDER’S EQUIPMENT

 Arm Guard also used by catcher but this

safety gears worn to prevent our forearms
from injuries when collision, sliding and
such happens.

 Ankle Guard used to protect our ankle

from any wounds.

RULES OF THE GAME

PLAYERS

 Only 9 members per team will be played in the field.

SCORING

 Runners should fill the entire base and once they pass it (without skipping) until

through home plate then points will be counted. One runner equivalent to one point.

Hitting the ball means an opportunity to get multiple bases.

 In order to score ‘home run’, the batter must hit the ball outside of the field but not in

foul line.

INNINGS

 Softball has only 7 innings.

 Each team bats once in each inning before the sides switch. 3 outs per team per inning

(Rookie Road, n.d.).

STRIKE-OUT

 If ever the batter gets 3 strikes then batters out. This means that batter miss to hit the

ball 3 times.

 If ever batters hit the ball yet catch by opponent team before it lands on the ground,

then it is out.

 Each base has one guard and one umpire. To secure the base, base guard should get the

ball before runner gets its base.

 If ever batters hit by the pitcher, then it is free base or walk.
