ELEC325-Power Electronics Lab Manual - Lab#1

This document provides instructions for a lab experiment on simulating a buck DC-DC converter operating in continuous conduction mode (CCM). The objectives are to understand, design, simulate and validate the theory of a buck converter using ideal components. The lab involves simulating a buck converter circuit in MATLAB/Simulink or PSIM using given parameters. Students are asked to calculate duty cycle, plot waveforms, measure ripple current, compare results to theory, and complete a minimum CCM design analysis. The conclusion should summarize design aspects and benefits of simulating a buck converter.

LAB#1: BUCK DC-DC CONVERTERS IN CCM

I. Objectives
The objective of this experiment is to understand, design, simulate and validate the
theory of a Buck Converter operating in the Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM) using
ideal components.

II. Schematic of a Buck DC-DC Converter

The schematic of a buck DC-DC converter is shown in Fig. 1

Fig.1: Circuit of Buck DC-DC Converter

Assumptions for the DC-DC converter in Fig. 1:

a) The circuit is operating in the steady state mode at constant switching period T.

b) The inductor current is continuous (always positive).

c) The capacitor is very large, and the output voltage is constant.

d) The transistor is on for a time DT and off for a time (1-D)T

e) The components are ideal.

III. Simulation & Discussion

Use MATLAB/SIMULINK or PSIM software tools to simulate the buck dc-dc converter
in Fig. 1 in CCM, using the parameters given in Table I.

Table I: Parameters of the Buck DC-DC converter

Parameter Vin f L C Vo R

Value 20V 20kHz 200µH 50µF 12V 6Ω

1) Calculate the Duty cycle D

2) Plot the waveforms of iL , vL and vo during the last 5 switching periods.

3) Measure the peak-peak ripple ΔiL and compare it with the theoretical value

4) Plot iC waveform. Compare the iC waveform with the ripple in iL. Find the average
value of iC. Comment on the results and the comparison.

5) Plot the input current waveform and calculate its average and compare it to its
theoretical value. Comment on the results.

6) Make the load resistance R twice its original value. Measure the peak-peak ripple
current ΔiL. Compare this ΔiL to the one obtained in 3). Comment on this
comparison.

7) Minimum continuous conduction mode design:

i. Design the buck dc-dc converter for minimum continuous conduction

mode for the original load (Find Lmin). Verify the results by simulations.

ii. Again make the load resistance R twice its original value. Comment on
the obtained results.

IV. Conclusion
Conclude the report by summarizing the important benefits from the carried works, and
provide a good discussion and guidance on the design aspects of a Buck DC-DC
converter.
