Topic: Recognizing Sentences


Topic: Different Types of Sentences

Telling Sentences
A telling sentence tells about something. A telling sentence ends with a period.

We played a game.
Examples:
1. My cat can run fast.
2. The bus stops at the corner.
3. My favorite color is blue.

Asking Sentences
Some sentences ask a question. An asking sentence ends with a question
mark. ( ? )
Where is the library?
Examples:
1. What is the name of your mother?
2. What did you say?
3. Which book did you read?

Commanding Sentences
Some sentences tell people what to do. These sentences are called
commanding sentences. A commanding sentence ends with a period (.).

Tie your shoe.


Examples:

1. Write your name on your paper.


2. Please feed the cat.
3. Get your food.

Exclaiming Sentences
Some sentences show surprise or excitement. These sentences are called
exclaiming sentences. An exclaiming sentence ends with an exclamation point
(!).
It is so hot today!
Examples:

1. Wow, look at the giant rainbow! 3. I did it!


2. The music is too loud!

Topic: Action Verbs

A verb is a word that can show action.


The dog barks.
The word “barks” tells what the dog does. It is the action verb in the sentence.

Let’s identify the action verb in each sentence.


1. Josh plays badminton.
2. Lhoyd swims in the pool.
3. My mom prepared our dinner.

You are right if you answered plays, swims and prepared. Those words are all action
verbs.

Topic: Verbs ending in s


Add the letter s to a verb when the verbs tells what ONE person or thing does.

The frog hops.

Why did we use hops instead of hop? It’s because the word frog is referring to
only ONE, it is singular, so we have to use a singular verb also or the verb with
letter s.

That boy ______ ice cream.

like or likes?

Yes, you are right if you answered likes. The boy is only one so you need to use
verb ending in s.

write or writes
3. The girl _______ baking class.

Topic: Verbs Not Ending in s

Do not add the letter s to a verb when the verb tells what MORE THAN ONE
person or thing does.
The girls play.

The word “girls” is referring to MORE THAN ONE, it is a plural noun. So you have to use
plural verb or the verb without s.

My classmates _________ the movie.


like or likes?

You are right if you answered like.
