Module 1 & 2

This document provides an introduction and overview of key concepts in Revit Architecture. It discusses the Building Information Modeling (BIM) approach and how information is presented in drawings, views, and schedules from a single database. It also defines fundamental Revit terms like walls, floors, roofs, levels, and families. The document outlines the different file types, classifies element types as model, datum, or view-specific, and describes the parametric and relational nature of elements in Revit.

REVIT Architecture LECTURE MODULE 01 FOR Level 1

Arch. EnP SERGE T. CHUA, Jr. fuap M Arch CTM

Module 01.A INTRODUCTION TO REVIT ARCHITECTURE
BIM
BIM
BIM or Building Information Modelling contains & delivers information about the project when you need
it. These information are as follows:
1. Design
2. Scope
3. Quantities
4. Phases
PRESENTATION OF INFORMATION
Information about the project is presented in
1. Drawing sheet
2. 2D & 3D Views
3. Schedule
• Project Information is taken from one model database.

Module 01.b REVIT ARCHITECTURE BASIC CONCEPTS
 File Types (and extensions) :
Revit has four primary types of files that you will work with as a Revit user.
1. .RVT - Revit project` files; the file most used (also for backup files)
2. .RFA - Revit family file; loadable content for your project
3. .RTE - Revit template; a project starter file with office standards preset.
4. .RFT - Revit family template; a family starter file with parameters

 Elements :
The Revit platform has three fundamental types of elements :
1. Model Elements
2. Datum Elements
3. View-
View-Specific Elements

INFORMATION COLLECTION
• Information is collected from the Drawing & Schedule Views about and as you work on and is
coordinated cross all other project representations

PARAMETRIC RELATIONSHIP
• Any relationship between & among elements in a model that enable the coordination & change
management
• Parameter is defined as the number of characteristics that define the kind of relationships between &
among elements in a model.
CONSTRAINTS
 Level Constraints
 Lock/Unlock
 Pin/Unpin

BASIC REVIT CONCEPTS

Module 01.b Revit Architecture File & Element Types
 Some Model Components require a host before they
can be placed within a project. For example, a window
can only be placed in a host, which could be a wall,
roof or floor depending on how the element was
created. If the host is deleted, all hosted or dependent
HOST
elements are automatically deleted. ELEMENTS
 Host Element Tools are the same for each "flavor" of MODEL
Revit. ELEMENTS
 Model Components Options vary depending on the (HOSTED )
"flavor" of Revit (e.g., Revit MEP has a Duct tool
whereas Revit Architecture and Revit Structure do not).

ELEMENT TYPES
• Generally built in-place at the construction site.
• All other elements in the building model.
• 2D components that document the model and are scaled per view
• 2D items that provide “view-specific” details about the building model.
Module 01.b Revit Architecture File & Element Types
1. Model Elements
• “things you can put your hands on once the building has been constructed”.
• Typically 3D, but can sometimes be 2D.
Two Types Of Model Elements:

A. Host Elements (4) B. Model Elements/Components

1. Walls 1. Stairs
2. Floors 2. Doors
3. Roofs 3. Furniture
B. Ceilings 4. Beams
5. Columns
6. Pipes, Ducts
7. Light Fixtures
8. Model Lines

MODEL ELEMENTS
Module 01.b Revit Architecture File & Element Types
2. Datum Elements
 reference planes within the building
that graphically & parametrically
define the location of various
elements within the model.
 These features are available in all
"flavors" of Revit. Three Types Of
Datum Elements:
1) Grids
2) Levels
3) Reference Planes

DATUM ELEMENTS
Module 01.b Revit Architecture File & Element Types
View--Specific Elements
3. View
 these items only show up in the specific view where they are created. (Notes and dimensions added
in the architectural floor plans will not show up in the structural floor plans).
 2D only and are mainly communication tools used to accurately document the building for
construction or presentations.
1) Annotation elements (text, tags, symbols, dimensions)
 Size automatically set and changed based on s elected drawing scale
2) Details (detail lines, filled regions, 2D detail components)

VIEW SPECIFIC ELEMENTS

Module 01.b Revit Architecture File & Element Types
1) Grids
1. Typically laid out in a plan view to locate structural elements (columns, beams & walls).
2. Grids show up in plan, elevation and section views.
3. Moving a grid in one view moves it in all other views as it is the same element.
2) Levels
1. Used to define vertical relationships, mainly surfaces that you walk on.
2. Visible only in elevation and section views.
3. Many elements are placed relative to a Level; when the Level is moved those elements move with it
(e.g., doors, windows, casework, ceilings).
4. If a Level is deleted, those same "dependent" elements will also be deleted from the project.
3) Reference Planes
1. Similar to grids that are visible in plan and elevation or sections.
2. Reference Planes are used to define 2D surfaces on which to work within the 3D model. They can be
placed in any view, either horizontally or vertically.
3. No reference bubbles at the end.

DATUM ELEMENTS

VIEW SPECIFIC ELEMENTS

Module 01.b Revit Architecture File & Element Types
ELEMENT CLASSES:
1. Loadable Family
• can be loaded into a project
• are created on family templates
2. System
• cannot be loaded/created as separate files; walls, dimensions, ceilings, roofs, floors & levels.
3. In-
In-place
• customized elements as defined within project context as it is created.
• In-place elements of unique geometry as needed by the project.
TWO ELEMENT PROPERTIES:
1. Type Properties
• Type property values affect all current & future instance of the family type when changed
2. Instance Properties
• Instance property values affect the selected elements only or those intended to be placed.

ELEMENT CLASSES & PROPERTIES

Module 01.c Revit Architecture Project Browser
The three fundamental ways to work with the elements (for display &
manipulation) are through:
1. Views
2. Schedules
3. Sheets

WORKING WITH REVIT ELEMENTS

Module 01.c Revit Architecture Project Browser
Views
 Accessible from the Project Browser, is where most of the work is done while using Revit.
 Think of views as slices through the building, both horizontal (plans) and….
 Vertical views (elevations and sections) .
Plans
 A Plan View is a horizontal slice through the building. You can specify the location of the cut plane which
determines if certain windows show up or how much of the stair is seen.
 Examples:
Architectural Floor Plan, Reflected Ceiling Plan, Site Plan, Structural Framing Plan, HVAC Floor Plan,
Electrical Floor Plan, Lighting [Ceiling] Plan, Etc.

WORKING WITH REVIT ELEMENTS

Module 01.c Revit Architecture Project Browser
The following images show this concept;
 the RIGHT image on the left is the 3D BIM.
 The BOTTOM image shows the portion of
building above the cut plane removed.
 Finally, the BOTTOM RIGHT image on the right
shows the plan view in which you work and
place on a sheet.
