1. In reciprocating internal combustion engine (I.C.E), derive a mathematical

formula for the instantaneous piston displacement measured from top dead center.

2. Find the volume inside cylinder at 40° ATDC in the expansion stroke. The crank
radius is 5 cm, the cylinder diameter is 9 cm and the clearance volume is 75 cm3.

3. An I.C.E has a compression ratio of 16 and clearance volume of 150 cm3. If the
cylinder diameter is 12 cm, find the connecting rod length. Assume a 0.25 crank
to connecting rod radius length ratio.

4. An I.C.E produces 10 KW indicate power at 2000 rpm. If the engine mechanical

efficiency is 85%, calculate the torque on the engine shaft and the brake power.

5. A four-stroke I.C.E consists of four cylinders. The stroke length is 10 cm and the
cylinder diameter is 8 cm. The engine produces 20 KW at 2500 rpm. Find the
brake mean effective pressure of the engine.

6. A four stroke diesel engine has four cylinders, 15 cm cylinder diameter, 16 cm

stroke length and 75% volumetric efficiency, based on inlet manifold conditions.
The pressure and temperature in the inlet manifold are 95 kpa and 20℃
respectively. when the engine runs at 1500 rpm, calculate:
1- The amount of fuel injected inside each cylinder per cycle. Assume A/F ratio
equals 25.
2- The volume of ambient air entering the engine, in L/min.
3- The brake specific fuel consumption, if the brake mean effective pressure of
the engine is 7 bar

7. An I.C.E has cylinder diameter 8 cm and stroke length 12 cm. If the clearance
volume 0.8617×10−4 𝑚3 , find thermal efficiency of the engine according to air
standard cycles (ASC) calculations.

8. A S.I.E has a compression ratio of 10. The temperature increases by 1900 degree
above its value at the end of compression stroke, due to heat addition. Find the
indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) of the engine.
9. One cylinder-two stroke engine has crank shaft radius 4 cm and stroke to diameter
ratio 1.2. The engine compression ratio is 10 and the temperature ratio in the heat
addition process is 3.5 based on the ASC calculation. Find:
1- Engine thermal efficiency
2- IMEP
3- IP at 3000 rpm

10. Diesel engine with compression ratio 16 and cylinder diameter 18 cm. find
temperature and pressure after 150 crank degree from the theoretical end of the
suction stroke. If it has 24 cm stroke and stroke to connecting rod length ratio is
0.52.

11. Diesel engine has a compression ratio of 16. The cut-off ratio is 1.5. Find the
engine thermal efficiency and the mean effective pressure.

12. Based on the ASC, find the engine thermal efficiency if the pressure at the end of
compression is 22 bar and the maximum pressure in the cycle is 45 bar, find heat
added and IMEP.

13. An engine rotates with 2000 rpm. The fuel needs 2.5 ms. for combustion. Find
the number of crank angle degrees during the combustion process.

14. A dual air standard cycle has a compression ratio of 15. If the product of pressure
ratio by cut-off ratio is 3. The temperature at start of compression is 27. Find the
maximum temperature in the cycle.
