Backup and
Restoration Overview
Overview
Accurate configurations are key elements for proper system operation. If the
configurations are not proper, system operation will be greatly affected, even leading to
irretrievable loss for system owners.
During the device operation procedure, you may need to modify the configurations
sometimes. To validate the modified configurations and make sure the proper
configurations in abnormal cases, the system provides configuration file backup and
restoration measures, which improves system serviceability.

Forbidden Operations
The following operations are forbidden in the backup and restoration procedure:
Backup and restoration in busy hours is forbidden.
Note
Backup operation may affect the disk I/O and greatly affect the operation of the
existing network. This operation must be performed when the system is idle,
for example, at 0:00-4:00 in the early morning. Before backup operation, strict
examination and approval is required to be performed by specially-assigned persons.
The system backs up all configurations of NEs through periodical tasks, including
saving the current system operation configurations to configuration files and uploading
configuration files to the FTP/SFTP server.
Backup configuration files are saved in the Flash of the product or uploaded to the
specified directory of the FTP/SFTP server, refer to Table 3-1.
Interval for automatic backup or File path configured on the FTP/ startrun.dat
specified time SFTP server.
Before capacity expansion and upgrade, to guarantee system security, you must
manually back up data so that data can be restored as needed. For the manual backup
policy, refer to Table 3-2.
Configuration files Saving the file on the local startrun.dat Refer to "3.3 Backing Up
disk before saving it on the Configuration Files".

2. Select Security > Users/rights... The User/Rights Security dialogue box appears,
see Figure 3-2.
3. In the User/Rights Security dialogue box, click New User.... The New User
dialogue box appears, see Figure 3-3.
4. In the User Name text box, enter ftpuser, and click OK. The Change Password
dialogue box appears, see Figure 3-4.
5. In the New Password text box, enter ftp123, and reenter the password in the Verify
Password text box. Click OK.
6. In the User/Rights Security dialogue box, enter D:\ as the root directory in the
Home Directory text box, see Figure 3-5.
Context
During the configuration file saving procedure, the CLI and SNMP operations on
the system can be performed only after configuration files are saved. The file write
procedure takes a long period.
Steps
Note
Because FTP has potential risk in file transferring, it is recommended to use SFTP to
download and upload files.
Verification
The information saved in a configuration file can be verified in one of the following
modes:
Enter a command to display the contents of the configuration file, or compare the
sizes of the files saved on the FTP/SFTP server and Flash.
Open the configuration file saved on the FTP/SFTP server by using the text editor to
check the file or verify that the files saved on the FTP/SFTP server and Flash have
the same size.
Example
ZXAN#write
.Write DB OK!
Building configuration...

2. Copy the db.dat file to the directory of the SFTP user named zte on the host
168.1.1.1 from the flash memory datadisk0 directory.

improper operations delete some key terminal
user data.
Prerequisite
Before restoring configuration files, ensure that the system software operates properly.
After an FTP/SFTP server is configured for the system, the system can interconnect with
the FTP/SFTP server through a network.
Context
During the configuration restoration procedure, services on NEs may be interrupted and
configurations are re-configured. Before saving the existing configurations, distribute the
configurations onto external servers.
Before configuration restoration, check whether the key services of the configuration
files to be loaded are properly configured. Make sure that the new configuration files are
normal and system configurations can be properly restored.
Steps
Note
Because FTP has potential risk in file transferring, it is recommended to use SFTP to
download and upload files.
Verification
After NE configurations are reloaded, you can run the show running-config command
to check whether the configurations for key services are proper.
