Unit 16+19, Probability

This document contains 11 questions about probability involving dice rolls, coin flips, spinners, cards in a box, discs in a bag with numbers on them, counters in bags of different colors, shoe sizes of students, and a challenging question combining drawing counters from two bags and modifying numbers based on the colors drawn. The questions require calculating and comparing probabilities of different outcomes using concepts like relative frequency, equally likely outcomes, and counting favorable/total outcomes.

Q1) Rose is playing a game with a fair six sided dice and a fair coin. She rolls the
dice and flips the coin. List all the possible outcomes.

Q2) Josie wants to test if a coin is biased. She flips the coin 30 times. Here are
here results.

(a) Complete the relative frequency table.

(b) Do you think the coin is biased? Explain your answer.

Q3) Katie rolls a dice 100 times. The table shows the results.

Work out the relative frequency of throwing:

(a) An even number (b) A square number

(c) A prime number (d) A cube number

(e) A multiple of 3 (f) A factor of 18

Q4) Amir makes a fair spinner with six sectors.

Use a word from the box which best describes the probability of each of the
following events
(a) The spinner will land on 6

(b) The spinner will land on 3

2
(c) The spinner will land on 2

(d) The spinner will land on a number greater than 1

Q5) The following cards are placed in a box.

A card is selected at random. Find the probability that the number on the card is
(a) 3 (b) an odd number

Q6) A bag contains 10 discs. Each disc is labelled with a different number from 1
to 10. A disc is chosen from the bag at random. Write down the probability that
the chosen disc is
(a) the number 3 (b) a number less than four

(c) a square number (d) a prime number

Q7) There are only pink, yellow, green and blue counters in a bag. The table
shows the probability that a counter taken at random from the bag will be pink,
green or blue. Work out the probability that the counter taken is yellow.

Q8) The table shows the shoe size of 23

students. A student is picked at random.
(a) Work out the probability that the student has
a shoe size of 8.

(b) Work out the probability that the student has

a shoe size of 7 or smaller.

Q9) Beatrice has a biased four sided spinner. The table shows the probabilities
that the spinner will land on a 2 or 3. The probability that the spinner will land on
1 is three times the probability that the spinner will land on 4. Work out the
probability that the spinner will land on 1.

Q10) There are 12 red roses, 5 yellow roses and 3 white roses in a vase. Felix
takes a rose, at random, from the vase.
(a) Write down the probability that he takes a white rose.
4
(b) Write down the probability that he takes a red or a white rose.

(c) Write down the probability that Felix takes a rose that is not red.

Q11) There are 20 counters in a bag. 2 of the counters are white. 1 of the
counters is pink. 4 of the counters are black. The rest of the counters are purple.
Carter takes a counter at random from the bag.
Show that the probability that the counter is white or purple is 3/4

Challenging question:
Two bags, 1 and 2, each contain counters that are equal size. Bag 1 contains a
pink counter, green counter and yellow counter. Bag 2 contains counters labelled
5
2, 3, 4 and 5. A counter is drawn at random from bag 1 and a counter is drawn at
random from bag 2. If the counter from bag 1 is pink, the number on the counter
from bag 2 is doubled. If the counter from bag 1 is green, one is added to the
number on the counter from bag 2 If the counter from Bag 1 is yellow, the
number on the counter from bag 2 stays the same. Complete the table to show all
possible scores.
