Let Us Learn!
In this module, you will apply the key concept of measure of position
for grouped data particularly on decile. It is here to help you use
mathematical ideas in solving real-life problems or in making conclusions
and decisions.

3 + 20.5= 23.5
D4 = 23.5
D4 = 23.5
Therefore, 40% of the students have a score less than or equal to 23.5.
• 40% of the students who took the test scored lower than 23.5.
• The score 23.5 is better than the other 40% of the students who
took the test.
• 60% of the students who took the test scored higher than 23.5.
• The score 23.5 is lower than the other 60% of the students who
took the test.

Dk = LB + i
f Dk
• LB = 25.5

• 4/4=1
• 1x5=5
• 5 + 25.5= 30.5
D7= 30.5
D7 = 30.5
Therefore, 70% of the students have a score less than or equal to 30.5.
• 70% of the students who took the test scored lower than 30.5.
• The score 30.5 is better than the other 70% of the students who
took the test.
• 30% of the students who took the test scored higher than 30.5.
• The score 30.5 is lower than the other 30% of the students who

Dk = LB + i
f Dk
• LB = 35.5
• kN/10 = 18
• cfb = 17
• fD9 = 3

Step 4: Solve for the value of the required decile.
kN
10 − cf b
Dk = LB + i
f Dk • 18-17 = 1
• 1 / 3 = 0.33333
18−17 • 0.33333 x 5 = 1.66667
D9 = 35.5 + [ ] 5 - - - - - - -- • 1.66667 + 35.5= 37.17
3
D9= 37.17
D9= 37.17
Therefore, 90% of the students have a score less than or equal to 37.17.
• 90% of the students who took the test scored lower than 37.17
• The score 37.17 is better than the other 90% of the students who
took the test.
• 10% of the students who took the test scored higher than 37.17.
• The score 37.17 is lower than the other 10% of the students who
took the test.

Let Us Reflect
In this lesson, you learned that deciles are the nine score points which
divide a distribution into ten equal parts. 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%,
70%, 80% and 90% of the distribution fall below the 1st decile, 2nd decile,
3rd decile, 4th decile, 5th decile, 6th decile, 7th decile, 8th decile and 9th decile
respectively. Decile is one of the most important concepts of measures of
position. Your understanding of this lesson, combined with other previously
learned Mathematics concepts on measures of position will help you
understand the next lesson which is on percentile, and helps in solving real-
life problems and in formulating conclusions and making wise decisions.
