Assignment Questions. (Total marks=20)

Q: Define the concept of development in your own words. What are the stages of Human
development? Enlist these stages. Discuss the characteristics of at least one stage in detail
with examples? (2+8+10=20 marks)

Ans. Development:
In human life, development refers to a continuous change in different aspects and
doings of one’s life. Best word for development could be a regular or continuous change. This
change may be in the behavior of a person, his intellectual level, ability to differentiate between
right and wrong, ability to tackle various problems in life, maturity in selecting the social cycle
around him as well. Not every change could be considered as development as development refers
to permanent change, not a change which just last for a while or so.
As we are saying that development is a continuous process, it is also pertinent to mention here
that development occurs in some specified and well-structured pattern. It’s not just any random
change in behavior of a person.
Last but not the least, development is a lifelong process which starts from the birth of a child to
the death of a person.

Stages of human development:

There are several stages of human development where each stage has a certain dependability on
the age of a person. It all starts from the early life to adult and then onto the latter half of life.
Considering all that, human development is categorized into following eight stages:

1. The prenatal period (conception to birth)

2. The stage of Infancy and Toddlerhood (birth to age 3)
3. The early childhood (3 to 6 years)
4. The middle childhood (6 to 11 years)
5. The period of Adolescence (11 years to about 20 years)
6. Young Adulthood (20 to 40 years)
7. Middle Adulthood (40 to 65 years)
8. Late Adulthood (65 years and above)

The phase of infancy and toddlerhood:

In the infancy stage, the child learn how to trust the person who is taking care of him. There
could be a situation where the person looking after the child is having keeping every need of
child at the exact time without causing him to wait. The contrary scenario would be where a
child’s caretaker is lazy in looking after the child and make him cry a lot and then meets his
need. Each tactic will have its own impact on the later life of the child. To elaborate that point
more clearly, following example could be useful.

For example, if a child is hungry, he will cry for the food. If he gets the food on time, they learn
that trusting on other is comfortable. On the other hand if child’s need is fulfilled after long wait,
he learns to trust less or rely less on other people in his life.

Growing up to the phase of toddlerhood, the toddler learns to be either efficient and confident or
to be shy and less confident to his abilities. If he is encouraged to be more independent, he will
have the chance to explore things on his own and will ultimately become confident. On the other
hand if he is encouraged to be dependent, then he will feel shy and less confident to his abilities.
