Math-9-First-Grading - OCT21

The document is a daily lesson log from San Pedro National High School for a Grade 9 math class. It details the objectives, content, procedures, and reflections from a lesson on quadratic functions taught by Teacher Jem Lene B Roxas. The lesson covered key concepts like the standard and vertex forms of quadratic equations, graphing parabolas, and the effects of changing coefficients on the graph. Examples and practice problems were used to reinforce the new concepts before an evaluation. The teacher reflected on the lesson's effectiveness and areas for improvement.

Quadratic Functions

 A quadratic function is a polynomial function of degree 2.

 The standard form of a quadratic function can be written in the
form y = ax2 + bx + c or f(x) = ax2 + bx + c where a, b, and c are
real numbers and a ≠ 0.
 The graph of a quadratic function is a Parabola. It has different
properties including vertex, axis of symmetry, opening of the
parabola, and the intercepts.
 Quadratic functions can be presented by table of values.
equations and graphs.
 Quadratic Function defined by y = ax2 + bx + c can be
transformed into the form y = a(x – h)2 + k (called the Vertex
Form), by using the Completing the Square Method.

Example 1: The following are examples of quadratic

functions.

a. f(x) = x2 + 6
b. g(x) = (x – 4)2 + 6
c. y = 2x2 – 3x + 6
C. Presenting examples / instances
Example 2: Transform y = x2 – 6x – 6 into
of the new lesson y = a(x – h)2 + k

Solution:

y = x2 – 6x – 6
y = (x2 – 6x) – 6
y = (x2 – 6x + 9) – 6 - 9
y = (x – 3)2 – 15

h=3 k = -15
Example 3: Rewrite y = 3x2 + 5x + 1 in vertex form.

Solution:
a=3 b=5 c=1

Find h and k

−b −5 5
h= = =-
2 a 2(3) 6

4 ac−b2 = 4 (3)(1)−5 = 12−25 = - 13
