Let Us Study

Recreation – is an activity of leisure, leisure being

discretionary time. The need to do something for
recreation is an essential element of human
biology and psychology. Recreational activities are
often done for enjoyment, amusement, or
pleasure and are considered to be fun. Some of
the activities are less physically active (passive)
that doesn’t need to exert extra effort and energy,
but others are physically active that requires to
burn extra calories. The activities that someone
voluntary participate in during their free time are
called Recreation.

There are two types of recreational activities: Indoor and Outdoor.

INDOOR RECREATIONAL ACTIVITES

The recreation program also includes indoor sports. Indoor leisure practices are
those that are done in the comfort of one's own home, or more precisely indoors,
with the aim of rejuvenating the mind and soul. Indoor leisure sports include
table games, woodworking, photography, computer or board games, badminton,
volleyball, and even dancing.

Sample of Indoor Recreational Activities

Badminton

The game is played by either singles, doubles and mixed doubles. A game
is won when a player/s reach a score of 21 points. In case of a deuce (20-all),
one has to gain a two-point advantage over the other. But in case of a 29-all
score, the first to reach 30 will win the set. A match is won by winning two out of
three sets.

Volleyball

Volleyball is a team sports with six players in each side of the court with a
9x18 meters dimension. The objective of the game is to send the ball over the net
and avoid it from grounding into your own court. A ball, net, and a court are
needed to play the game. Scoring follows a rally point system. A game is won in a
two out of three sets. A set is won by reaching a score of 25. In case of a deuce, a
team should have a two-point advantage over the other. Players need skills like
service, volleying, setting, spiking and blocking to enjoy much of the game and
gain its fitness benefits.

BENEFITS OF SPORTS

Badminton and Volleyball are good recreation activities that involve the
physical dimension, hence:
• It enhances the metabolism of the body which in turn is a factor in
losing weight.
• Since sport is fun, emotional well-being is improved.
• Playing with strategies and tactics involves the intellectual dimension.
• It also builds good relationships, trust with teammate, camaraderie and
teamwork.

Very Essay! On your activity notebook, write a short paragraph (at least 100
words) about the question: Do you think playing badminton, volleyball and
participating Zumba can promote health, fitness and wellness among family
members? How?

2. OUTDOOR RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES

Outdoor recreation refers to activities that support the body, mind, and/or spirit
and take place in a natural environment. Hiking, fishing, trekking, camping, and
wildlife viewing are only a few examples.

ORIENTEERING

It is an outdoor navigational recreational activity using specially drawn and

detailed maps. It requires navigational skills to navigate from point to point
normally moving at a speed. Orienteering offers much benefit to you such as:
1. Conceptual Aspects – enhances your decision-making skills about map
interpretations and using compass.
2. Physical Aspect – it develops cardiovascular endurance and general
fitness.
3. Personal Aspects – develop self-confidence and reliance
4. Social Aspects – learn to work cohesively with one another.
5. Environmental Aspects – it creates an avenue for you to appreciate your
environment.

Fundamental Skills in Orienteering

• Find your approximate location of the map
• Recognize the pattern of features on the ground as being the same as
the pattern on the map.
• Always hold the map so that you are looking along the route with the
map matching the ground

The MAP is a picture or representation of the earth’s surface. It includes a

compass rose that shows directions. Cardinal directions are four base parts on a
compass. The top point is north and the bottom is south. The side points are
called east and west.

Orienteering Compass is an invaluable tool that every backpacker should know

how to use. It is a magnetized needle floating in a liquid and responding to the
earth’s magnetic field consequently revealing directions. Generally, a compass is
used to measure bearings and to pinpoint locations.

Lesson ZUMBA, YOUR WAY OF FITNESS,

2 YOUR WAY OF RECREATION!

Let Us Study

For those who love the beat of rhythm and movement, dance is another
indoor alternative recreation. It's an excellent and enjoyable type of exercise that
steadily increases heart rate. As a result, dance is an excellent aerobic workout.
Participating in dance events on a regular basis tightens and tones muscle
groups while also burning calories.

ZUMBA FITNESS DANCE

Zumba dance is an indoor aerobic activity that appears

to have health benefits. Alberto "Beto" Perez, a
Columbian celebrity fitness trainer, discovered it by
chance in the mid-1990s. When he realized he had
forgotten his aerobics music during one of his aerobics
classes, he created Zumba. He quickly snatched up
whatever tape he could find in his backpack. His tapes
just so happened to be of Latin music, such as
merengue and salsa. He was able to develop an on-the-
spot aerobics class using non-traditional music thanks
to his improvisation. That was the beginning of the
Zumba workout craze!

https://www.google.com/search?q=zumba+clipart+black+and+white&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEw

BENEFITS OF ZUMBA DANCE

1. It promotes cardiovascular health – The quick and slow rhythms combine to

create aerobic cycles, making this dance a perfect cardio interval workout.

11
Zumba's quick and upbeat movements help to boost blood flow, which
transports oxygen throughout the body through veins, arteries, and the heart.

2. It aids weight loss because Zumba's aerobic interval effect maximizes calorie
burn. An hour of Zumba exercise burns approximately 600 calories.

3. It helps to alleviate tension. Zumba dancing is thought to produce more

mood-altering endorphins, which help you forget about your worries.

4. It elevates one's spirits. It increases self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-

image by releasing feel-good hormones called "endorphins."

5. The dance movements work on firmer core abdominal muscles, which tones
the abs.

BASIC ZUMBA STEPS - Zumba is a Latin dance workout that combines salsa,
samba, reggaeton, merengue, cumbia, cha-cha-cha, mambo rumba, and
flamenco. Many moves, such as belly dancing and hip hop, have been added to
make the dance more exciting.

ZUMBA WORKOUT ELEMENTS - While the Zumba philosophy is “Ditch the

workout – join the party!”, Zumba workouts are aimed at sculpting and toning
the entire body. Elements of a Zumba fitness class include:

• Interval training
• Resistance training
• Cardio workout
• Calorie burning
• Fat burning
• Body toning

Lesson Ethics and the Environment!
3
Let Us Learn!

THE LEAVE NO TRACE POLICY – source sa pics.

Leave No Trace is a collection of outdoor ethics that

promotes environmental protection. It is made up of
seven concepts that have been adapted to various
behaviors, habitats, and environments.

There was a cultural change in wilderness ethics in the

mid-twentieth century, from woodcraft, where wilderness
travelers prided themselves on their ability to rely on the
resources of wild lands, to a post-WWII ethics of minimal
environmental effect. In the 1960s and 1970s, the Leave
No Trace movement began. Following the introduction of
new camping equipment such as white gas stoves,
synthetic tents, and sleeping pads, there was a
significant rise in wilderness visitation. This sparked a commercial interest in
outdoor recreation, resulting in an increase in the number of people visiting
national parks. The US Forest Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the
National Park Service began teaching nonmotorized tourists how to have a minimal
effect on the land during those decades. Visitors to the parks were taught how to
camp in a low-impact manner by Wilderness Informational Specialists. The three
departments collaborated on a booklet titled "Leave No Trace Land Ethics" in 1987.
The Leave No Trace national education program was created in 1990 by the US
Forest Service in collaboration with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS).

The “Leave No Trace” Principles

A. PLAN AHEAD AND PREPARE

- Learn about the place you'll be exploring. Do some background research on
the place, people, modes of transportation, and weather in the region. Bring a
first-aid bag, appropriate clothes, and just the right amount of food for your
journey.

B. TRAVEL AND CAMP ON DURABLE GROUND

- Do not walk or drive on areas that were not designed for human use.
Trampling on plants does not seem to be a big deal, but it has a big impact on
the environment. To mitigate harm, even if it means taking a longer route to
your destination, do so. Sturdy ground that does not erode and crumble when
walked on is preferred.

C. DISPOSE OF WASTE PROPERLY

"Pack it in, pack it out,". Be sure to bring everything you bring to a location
back home with you. Wet wipes, leftover food, tin cans, plastic containers,
mineral water bottles, utensils, cigarette buds or packets, alcohol bottles, and
other items should not be left outside. Garbage has no place in parks,
beaches, or mountain tops. In counties, garbage should be disposed of.

14
D. LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND
- Consider a stranger who comes to your home and takes a nice piece of
furniture with them before leaving. Even if it seems harmless, such as taking
a handful of sand, a pretty shell, or flowers home, resist the urge and leave it
for others to enjoy. It is disrespectful to the community, to the residents, and
to other tourists to deface or vandalize something outside.

E. MINIMIZE CAMPFIRE IMPACTS

- Avoid even starting a campfire because it is hazardous to the community.
Aside from that, a campfire's aftermath is unsightly, with smoke, charred logs,
and soot-covered rocks left behind. Just set up a campfire on an existing fire
pit if absolutely necessary to minimize damage to an environment and keep it
as clean as possible.

F. RESPECT WILDLIFE
- Avoid taunting, feeding, or harassing local wildlife by playing, taunting, or
abusing them. You're simply a tourist in their territory. Our biodiversity
already has enough problems to contend with due to pollution, the
temperatures, and rapidly encroaching growth.

G. BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHER VISITORS

- How would you feel if the party before you left food remains, alcohol
bottles, plastic bags, and butane bottles all over the place? What if they
trampled on patches of greenery that effectively destroyed trees, frightened
wildlife away, carved their names on stones or tree bark, set several
campfires, and trampled on flowers you wanted to see? It will also ruin the
experience for you.

Five Ways to Incorporate Leave No Trace into Your Everyday Life

1. Plan Ahead & Prepare the items that will help you minimize your impacts all day.
Do you tend to drink water out of a single use water bottle? Try packing a reusable
water bottle with you, so that you’re always ready to refill where facilities exist. Do
you pack a lunch with items that are in single-use packaging? Try buying in bulk
and using reusable receptacles such as an insulated container or silicone bags.

2. Consider how you dispose of waste in your everyday life. How much trash do you
produce each week? Do you have access to recycling or composting facilities? Join
the Leave No Trace Zero Landfill Initiative and work to…
• REDUCE all consumables, especially single use items.
• REUSE everything you possibly can.
• RECYCLE as a last resort.

3. Treat Living Plants with Respect. Whether it’s a flower in your local park or a tree
growing through a hole in the sidewalk, all flora that exists is intrinsically a part of
the natural world (as we are!) Picking or cutting into plants can lead to infections
and death, which can lead to a decline in overall ecosystem health.

4. Have a dog or other pet? Pick up their poop! Dog poop is a non-point source
pollutant – a single gram of dog doo doo can hold millions of fecal coliform bacteria
that can get into natural waterways and cause a variety of illnesses and infections
to human and wildlife. By disposing of your pet’s waste properly, you can ensure
the health and safety of local wildlife.

5. Give others the benefit of the doubt. See somebody doing something not so Leave
No Trace such as carving their initials into a tree or leaving their dog poop behind?
15
There is a good chance that they don’t realize the impact that they are making. Just
imagine what our world would look like if we all practiced Leave No Trace.

Let Us Reflect

Recreational activities provide us with a refreshing break from our

monotonous life. They give us an opportunity to socialize and to pursue our
hobbies. Recreation refers to the time spent in an activity one loves to engage
in, with an intent to feel refreshed. It is a break from monotony and a
diversion from the daily routine. It is a positive change from the stereotypical
lifestyle and involves an active participation in entertaining activities that
one is interested in. Recreational activities give enjoyment because, while
