Problem # 1: The thickness measurement of a wall of plastic tubing, in
millimeters, varies according to a cumulative distribution function

Determine the following.

a) P(X ≤ 2.0080)
b) P(X >2.0055)
c) If the specification for the tubing requires that the thickness measurement be
between 2.0090 and 2.0100 millimeters, what is the probability that a single
measurement will indicate conformance to the specification?

c) P(2.0090 < X < 2.0100) = P(2.0100) – P(2.0090) = 1- 0.8 = 0.2

Problem # 2: A medical linear accelerator is used to accelerate electrons to create
high-energy beams that can destroy tumors with minimal impact on surrounding
healthy tissue. The beam energy fluctuates between 200 and 210 MeV (million
electron volts). The cumulative distribution function is

Determine the following.

(a) P(X < 209)
(b) P(200 < X < 208)
(c) P(X > 209)
(d) What is the probability density function?
(e) Graph the probability density function and the cumulative distribution function.
(f ) Determine the mean and variance of the beam energy.

a) P(X < 209) = 0.1(209) – 20 = 0.9

b) P(200 < X < 208) = F(208) – F(200) = 0.8 – 0 = 0.8
c) P(X > 209) = 1 – F(209) = 1 – 0.9 = 0.1
d) f(x) = 0.1 for 200 ≤ x ≤ 210
e)

f) E(X) = 205, V(X) = 8.3333

Problem # 3: Show that the following functions are probability density functions
for some value of k and determine k. Then determine the mean and variance of X.
Problem # 4: Assume that X is normally distributed with a mean of 20 and a
standard deviation of 2. Determine the following.

a) P(X < 24) = P(Z < 2) = 0.97725

b) P(X > 18) = P(Z > -1) = 0.841345

c) P(18 < X < 22) = P(-1 < Z < 1) = P(Z < 1) – P(Z < -1) = 0.841345 – 0.158655 =
0.68269

d) P(14 < X < 26) = P(-3 < Z < 3) = 0.99865 – 0.00135 = 0.9973

Problem # 5: Assume that X is normally distributed with a mean of 6 and a

standard deviation of 3. Determine the value for x that solves each of the

(b) What is the probability that a line width is between 0.47 and 0.63 micrometer?
(c) The line width of 90% of samples is below what value?

with a mean diameter of 0.002 inch and a standard deviation of 0.0004 inch.
(a) What is the probability that the diameter of a dot exceeds 0.0026 inch?
(b) What is the probability that a diameter is between 0.0014 and 0.0026 inch?
(c) What standard deviation of diameters is needed so that the probability in part
(b) is 0.995?
