A single gaseous hydrocarbon has a density of 2.55 grams per liter at 100 C and one atmosphere.
Chemical analysis shows that for each carbon atom in the molecule there is one atom of hydrogen.
What is the formula of this hydrocarbon.

Solution

𝑃𝑀 Givens:
Density =
𝑅𝑇
Density = 2.55 gm/L = 0.0624*2.55 lb/cuft
𝑅𝑇∗𝐷𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦 10.73∗ 212+460 ∗0.0624∗2.55 P = 1 atm = 14.7 Psia
M= 𝑃
= 14.7
= 78 lb T = 100 C = 212 F = 212+460 R

CnHn -----M = 12*n+1*n = 13*n = 78

So, n = 6

So, the formula of HC is C6H6

Two cylinders of equal volume contain methane and ethane at 125 psia and 50 psia, respectively, at
100 F. If they are connected together and the gases are allowed to mix, what are the final pressure,
the partial pressures, and the composition of the resulting mixture.

A 10 cu ft tank contains a single paraffin gas at 150 psia and 95 F. when 5 lb of methane are added
the specific gravity of the gas mixture is 0.983. What gas was originally present in the tank

Solution
First condition: (Single Paraffin)

PV = nRT , n = 150*10/(10.73*(95+460)) = 0.252 lb.mole

0.252 0.3125
Second condition: (Methane + Paraffin) 𝑦1 = = 0.4464 𝑦1 = = 0.5535
𝑛1 𝑃𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑓𝑓𝑖𝑛 = 0.252 𝑙𝑏. 𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑒 0.5645 0.5645
5 Sp. Gr = 0.983 = M/29
𝑛2 (𝑀𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑒) = 16 = 0.3125 lb.mole
So, M=29*0.983 = 28.507 lb
𝑛𝑡 = 0.5645 lb.mole
= 0.4464*X + 0.5535*16
So, X = 44 lb
What is the paraffin which have Molecular weight = 44 lb ?, it is Propane

A dry gas reservoir is initially at an average pressure of 6000 psia and temperature of
160°F. The gas has a specific gravity of 065.

What will the average reservoir pressure be when one-half of the original gas (in SCF)
has been produced?

Assume the volume occupied by the gas in the reservoir remains constant. If the
reservoir originally contained 1 MM ft3 of reservoir gas, how much gas has been
produced at a final reservoir pressure of 500 psia.
