A Day in My Life
This is it! This the day Angelie has been waiting for, it is her first day at the job. She had been
recently hired in a big company she was aiming for. It was mentally and emotionally challenging,
as she need to pass the interview and compete with almost 500 job seekers who are also
desperate to be part of the company. In the end, it was all worth it not only because the salary is
good but also it was her dream job.
She headed for the bathroom and starts doing her routine. After preparing for almost 1 hour she
is now ready. She wore the corporate dress she had bought last week in the divisoria. She needs
to make a good impression with her workmates and boss for her first day. After eating 3 pieces
of pandesal and a glass of milk, she headed out for her work. It’s not like she is on a diet. She has
no choice but to save money and by that means consuming less food as possible. The sky outside
is still gray and sun hasn’t risen up yet, it’s still 5 am in the morning after all. Her work schedule
won’t be until 8 am but she needs to commute for at least 2 hours more or less. Commuting on
her way to work is never an easy task, she needs to travel early so she won’t get caught up in the
traffic, and she cannot afford to be late on her first day of work. That would be very
unprofessional of her.
When she reached the highway, she spotted a jeepney and hailed it. Unluckily the jeep was
almost full of passengers, but that didn’t stop her from getting in. Though, she had to ask for
them to adjust so that she can be able to sit down. People inside gave her rude stares, she sighed
and wiped the sweat from her forehead. She hasn’t reached her destination yet she already looks
so worn out. Drawing her pocket out, she took a 10 pesos bill and gave it to the driver. Riding a
cab is a lot more convenient than the riding a passenger jeep but she had no other choice. Jeep
is a lot cheaper and she needs to save her money since she just only found a job.
When she arrived at the company, she entered the building and saw a group of people sitting at
the lobby. She went directly to the desk lobby to ask for the floor of the office where she was
assigned to. The whole building was huge and spacious, and she knows that if she won’t ask for
directions, she would probably get lost. Luckily for her, the woman in the desk advised her to
wait in the lobby as someone will accompany her together with the other newly hired employees
and will show them around the building for their first day at work.
She thanked her, and walked to the group. They consist of 9 people with girls around her age and
some boys who were dressed well in dresses and pants. They were talking about something in
particular and look like they were already acquainted with each other. She approaches them and
sits on a vacant seat beside a girl who looks so out of the place in the group. They are seemed
engaged in a deep conversation and she doesn’t want to interrupt them by introducing herself.
She turned to that girl beside her instead and held her hands out.
“Hello, my name’s Angelie! Nice to meet you!”
The girl looks at her with shock in hser eyes but then recovered easily; she accepted her hand
and also introduced herself as Aby. She looks like a shy and timid person but Angelie didn’t mind
it and started a conversation at her.
They were in the middle of talking when a middle aged woman approaches their group. She
introduces herself as Mrs. Riego and told them that the tour will now begin. They stood up and
followed her. Angelie felt happy she made a great impression on them. Knowing that she is too
shy to approach anyone, it was a big step for her to be able to work in a company full of great
employees. It will not only challenge her social skills but also her perseverance and knowledge to
do her job properly and successfully.
When they reached the 10th floor where their supposed office is located, everyone seems too
busy in their own work to notice them. Some of them were on the telephone talking, some are
busy printing papers in the corner, and some are just typing something in their computers. There
are also a few who spared them a glance but immediately return their attention back to their
work. The entire room was full of cubicles and the full windows are showing the view of the city
below them.
Mrs. Riego cleared her throat which caught the attention of the employees inside the room. She
explained to them that we are the newly hired employees for this department and then she let
us introduce ourselves individually. It was a nerve-wrecking experience. After that they returned
to work like nothing happened. Mrs. Riego gave us a smile and showed us our respective cubicles.
Lucky for me, Aby’s cubicle was assigned just right next to mine. I haven’t familiarized my co-
worker’s name yet, except for her. I’m glad we became acquainted with each other already. My
cubicle is empty except for the monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Mrs. Riego instructed us to log in
the computer so that we can start our work.
After a long day at work, my day ended successfully, I think. I had able to make friends with some
of the old employees but some of them is not that really friendly? You really can’t please
everyone I guess? Maybe we can at least be acquainted in the future, but right now I just want
to appreciate what I’ve got and do better in my job.
