READING
Working as a lifeguard

It was a homework-free weekend. Allen suggested going swimming. He had just

completed his swimming course and was eager to try out the skills he had learnt. His
friends readily agreed. They headed straight for their neighborhood swimming
complex. It was quite crowded. They changed quickly and leapt into the pool. They
splashed around on the shallower end. A lifeguard was keeping a watchful eye on all
the swimmers. Allen challenged his friends for a swim over in the deep end. They
refused as they knew it was dangerous for them. Besides, they did not swim that well
after all. Allen insisted that he was a better swimmer and set out to prove it. He
walked over to the deep end and plunged in.

At first everything seemed alright and his friends cheered. Suddenly, Allen gave a
shout and started flailing his arms. He was having difficulties ! His friends were too
shocked to react.

Luckily, the lifeguard noticed him and quickly dived in. When he was safely out of the
pool, the lifeguard gave him a tongue-lashing for fooling around. Allen apologized.
All the way home, he had to endure his friends making fun of him.
