2021 and People's Choice Award for Favorite Action Movie (2020). In the making, Mulan's film
cost about 200 Million USD.

This article aims to explain Gender Inequality in the film Mulan 2020. Mulan's story comes
from an ancient Chinese poem called “Ballad of Mulan”, set in the Northern Wei Dynasty,
between 386 and 534 AD. There is no clear answer as to whether Mulan was a real person or not.
Some believe she really exists. On the mulanbook.com website, there is a memorial dedicated to
Mulan in Hubei Province, China. Hubei is claimed to be the fighter's original hometown. In
Mandarin, 'Huā' means flower and 'Mulan' means magnolia flower. Magnolia flower is one of
the symbols of China.

Mulan is often described as one of the top characters ever released by Disney and is one of
the most popular heroines in film studios. This is the reason why choosing this phenomenon is
because want to know more about Gender in Equality that occurs in China.

Gender inequality is a social phenomenon in which men and women are not treated equally.
Gender injustice is a form of difference in treatment based on gender reasons, such as role
correction, removal or favoritism that results in violations of human rights recognition, equal
rights between men and women and basic rights in the social, political, economic, cultural, and
others. Gender inequality with the Chinese imperial setting. It is set in a time when women
cannot do what men do. The patriarchal system was still attached to society that harmed women
at that time.

ANALYSIS
Mulan's actions, namely when training chi and his fighting ability, were advised by her
father that only men could use chi (body power, spiritual power). This describes the forms of
gender disobedience that occur in a woman, ranging from the chi problem that should only be
shown if the person is a man, to the position of the woman who is described as unequal to a man.

Women are said to only be able to bring honor to their families through marriage and being
a wife, and the portrayal of a good wife in those days is someone who is silent and invisible.
Chinese women when they are mature to marry, they are not given the freedom to go out even
though it is related to education. Unlike men who even though they are in the mature stage of
marriage are still given the freedom to do anything.

From this it can be seen that the man in China is seen to have more advantages, he can
behave freely, and can bring honor for what he does. This unequal portrayal of women occurs
because of the patriarchal system. There are many privileges or importance of boys in a Chinese
family, let alone a first boy. Because boys are considered to be able to help with family work,
helping parents take care of their younger siblings.

In addition, the first child of a boy is considered to have a bold attitude, firm, he can also
replace the role of father in any case. In Mulan's film, it is told that only the first boy can become
a soldier. This is what made Mulan finally decide to change her identity to a man because of the
importance of boys in China, the changes she made also paid off and made by saving the
Emperor, to be able to defeat the Rouran army and save the country where he lived.

This proves that women can also have equal abilities, even more than men, in fields that are
identical to men's work which others will also feel the benefits.

Mulan is a fun and appropriate film to be used as a learning about gender in equality. In this
film we are taught that not always a soldier is a man. And on the contrary, not always household
or kitchen matters are only intended for women. Audiences are taught that everyone has the right
to do what they want regardless of gender boundaries. Women can also be tough knights who
can protect those around them.
