UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma

Unit 13: Unit 13: Extended project in creative media production

The Final Major Project (Year Two)

STATEMENT OF AIMS

FMP unit is the summative unit in the final year of the two-year qualification. It
will provide students with a measure of self-directed learning through the
completion of a substantial creative media production and technology project.

The unit requires students to apply the skills, knowledge and understanding
developed over the entire course, to complete a creative media production project. It
will provide students with a measure of self-directed learning, and an opportunity to
further clarify their longer-term goals through their choice of an activity to explore in
greater depth.

Name
Ben Newman

Disciplines Video, Sound, Photography

(primary/secondary
)
(e.g. video,
animation, sound,
photography, 3D,
etc)
Project (e.g. short Promotional stuff for Gillman Lake Instagram
film, music video,
animation,
documentary, advert,
branding, etc.)
Section 1: Rationale (minimum of 100 words)
Since I have started college my knowledge of the contents within this course have
grown a lot and I have so much more knowledge that has helped me better the
quality of my work and through mainly practical work and not so much on the
quality of my theory or research side which is something I’m looking to improve
upon for this project and future projects. My skills having mainly developed in
using camera equipment, boom mic’s and using camera’s and ways of doing
certain shots and methods to make the recorder footage look better and less
shaky, and I have also gotten a lot better at using premiere pro which is a piece of
software I had no knowledge of before starting college and I have learned some
new skills in some less developed areas of my knowledge like adobe animate,
after effects, cinema 4d which are my least used software’s that I have gathered
some knowledge. During the filming project is where I felt like I exceled the most, I
really noticed an increase in my quality of work during this week when I was taught
a few things by other students and the lecturer of the group, during this week I
learned how to use a lumetri scope and colour grading and how to use the
practical equipment like camera’s, tripods, shotgun microphones, boom
microphone and how to manually set the focus on a camera and how to manually
change the video settings for a camera so I would no longer have to use an
automatic video setting’s.

For my first year FMP I wasn’t really proud since a fair amount of it was rushed
and random footage and stills to use up time so it would be able to loop, but for the
second year I can already tell that there’s going to be a big improvement from last
year because of the opportunity I got to be able to take over the Gillman lake
behind the scene’s Instagram profile and complete promotional task’s for a client
on a brief which isn’t something I thought I would get the opportunity to do and I
enjoyed working on the project that involved the profile and plan to go for the
highest grade I think is achievable. For my proposal my FMP will include me
making promotional work for the film and post my work through Instagram and
have the Instagram profile as my main FMP with all my work on after being given a
brief on what the client (lecturer) wants me to promote and what type of footage or
videos/reels to post to the profile.

Section 2: Project Concept (minimum of 200 words)

For the project concept I will be in charge of keeping people interested and
updated for the premiere of the film and start a production schedule of what day’s I
will be posting and what I’ll be posting during those days. I will be promoting the
film up until it premiere’s and potentially be sent work to make trailers and other
similar task’s, I will also be using footage I gathered during the week of the filming
project and edit video’s to a good standard and come up with captions for footage
and stills to post to the Instagram profile.
Section 3: Evaluation – How you plan to record your progress (minimum of 100
words)
I will plan to record my progress by attempting to make a post a day and record
myself compiling the footage together and editing the footage and using a mixture
of stills and recorded progress and compare the work that I completed to a
professional piece of work that is similar to mine and look for faults in my work and
use tutorials to help me improve and learn which I plan to link the video’s I will use
and timestamp them for the main bit of information that I needed if it is required or
a long video. I will also plan to get peer feedback through surveys or other
methods like family feedback or friend feedback on what they think I can improve
upon and talk about it in my daily reflection log.

Another way I plan to record my progress is by writing an evaluation after each

post I will do and what I think could be improved or what other people think could
be improved and where my weaker points in my skills are and how I can improve
them which is what I will also put in my daily reflection log and under the post’s will
make in my Weebly site. At the end of each week I’m going to write an evaluation
and compare it to my statement of aims and make sure I’m staying fairly on track
and not going to far from my original statement of aims and address any changes
that I would make to my statement of aims and why I decided to change it and
what impact it had and what people would have preferred my original idea for a
post or the new idea for a post for promotion.

For my conclusion on the final completion, I will be compiling all the evaluations
from the whole FMP and take what went well and what could have been improved
and why I made these choice’s and how I could have improved them and the
quality of my work as well as what skills I need to improve on.

Section 4: Proposed Research Sources

I will definitely be using YouTube video’s as a way of research for skills that I could
add to my work to make it more effective and increase the quality of my work
which I will timestamp on which parts I found the most useful and how it helped me
solve some problems that I encountered. A lot of the research I will be doing will
be online through website links, tutorials and google.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnWhWVarfqM
I will be using video tutorials like this and others from other content creators too
see if there is anything that I come across that I think would be able to help me
improve my work.

I’m also going to be putting research into social media and trends with some
techniques that are popular with Instagram which is going to be the social media
platform that I’m using.
Section 5: Equipment Required
For my FMP this year I will need to use a camera for filming as well as a tripod in
case I need to get more footage, also potentially a camera to get stills and
timelapse’s also with a tripod with an intervalometer to be able to get the
timelapse’s. The main software that I would require would be premiere pro with
potentially after effects to make some final tweaks to my work.

Section 6: Resources Required

I do not require many recourses since a lot of my footage has already been
gathered during the week of filming for the Gillman Lake project, the main
requirements for this I would need to be able to access the internet and one drive
since that’s where all of the footage that I will need is. I will also need access to a
computer to be able to complete my work and use all of the other recourses.

Section 7: Skills to develop/learn

I plan to improve on my premiere pro skills since that is what I’m going to be using
it most for my FMP. Skills I would like to improve in my premiere pro skills are
colour correcting to get the video looking natural and I would also like to better my
colour grading skills since it’s something I’m very new too and a skill that I think
would be very useful to improve my work. I also want to get better at editing the
footage, so it looks more relevant to the context of the video and not have as much
filler footage to take up time on the video. I would also want to learn how to sync
music with the video so it flow’s nicely and is a skill that I think can improve my
work by a lot.

Section 8: Personnel and responsibilities

My responsibilities for my FMP are making the production schedule for making
posts for my Instagram profile as well as actually making the post’s and also
coming up with captions for each video or post. I will not be requiring other
personnel since I have already got my footage and highly doubt I will need much
more.
Section 9: Intended audience and context
The intended audience of my FMP will be the students of Poole college and
anyone else who will be watching the Gillman Lake filming project since my FMP is
about keeping people interested in the project by posting footage from behind the
scenes and other footage I’ve gathered of production and the different teams as
well

Section 10: Creative Mindsets

I plan to use the creative mindsets to help me complete my FMP, I will use ownership,
critical thinking, risk taking and collaboration. I am taking ownership of the Gillman Lake
Instagram profile and responsibility for how much work I produce and the quality of work I
make and as well as what goes onto the Instagram profile and making promotional
footage and work for the college. I plan to use collaboration and incorporate other people
into my post’s and help other people with their FMP since I have been asked to participate
in another FMP project.

How to successfully complete a final major project

1. Do something you enjoy – look back on projects this year and think about
what skills you’ve learnt and which you have really enjoyed. What job would
you like to do in the future? How can you apply it to your project? Pick a
theme or themes which you can connect with.
LOVE YOUR PROJECT

2. Do lots and lots of research – primary and secondary are both essential.
Use a wide range of methods and resources, such as questionnaires,
surveys, interviews (Primary), and researching the work of professional
practitioners and techniques (Secondary).

3. Manage your time – Just think how fast this year has gone so far. Plan
ahead and don’t fall behind. MAKE USE OF INDEPENDENT STUDY TIME.

4. You must document everything what happens as you go along. Your entire
journey from start to finish should be fully recorded. Describe and analyse as
you go along. Every aspect of your project should be fully considered. Your
Planning and Schedule will be vital to the success of your FMP
5. Research, design, experiment, build, evaluate. Your project should evolve
over the allotted time. Be flexible and adaptable if your FMP decides to go in
a different direction than first intended. Ensure you record all developments as
the project develops.

6. Critically analyse and evaluate – this will refer to the research you
undertake, the pre-production, production and post-production. Don’t just
describe but analyse, interpret, research and evaluate.

7. Listen to advice from your lecturers in formative assessment sessions

throughout the project. You might just find that as we are used to marking
work, we know what the requirements are to make good/exceptional projects.
Remember, your work will be graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, so aim
for the best grade you can and take advice on board when given.

8. You are being graded against SEVEN Learning Outcomes, so you need to
ensure that you do the very best in each of them to achieve the grade you
may require, so pay close attention to all parts of the FMP
